Detroit Lions’ wide receiver Nate Burleson broke his arm in a single-car accident early Tuesday morning – and will miss an undetermined number of games following surgery.
According to the Associated Press, the 11-year veteran out of the University of Nevada sustained the injury attempting to “keep two pizza boxes from falling off the front passenger seat.”
“He had purchased two whole pizzas, and one was sitting on top of the other one, and I guess when he was driving one of them was slipping off, and he was reaching over to push it back onto the seat and overcorrected and hit the median wall,” a Michigan State police officer told ESPN.
No word yet on the fate of the pizzas …
Burleson has 437 receptions for 5,408 yards and 38 touchdowns over the course of his career – which has also included stints with the Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings. At the time of his injury he was leading the Lions (2-1) with nineteen catches – and was second only to Calvin Johnson in receiving yardage.
The accident occurred at 2:25 a.m. on a highway in suburban Detroit. Police say alcohol was not a factor. Burleson picked up the late night grub after watching the Denver Broncos play the Oakland Raiders on Monday Night Football.
This is the second major injury Burleson has suffered with the Lions. He missed the final ten games of last season after suffering a broken leg in a late October game against the Chicago Bears.
