South Carolina could get a fourth area code in 2015, according to the state’s public service commission … which means aspiring local rappers should probably pay attention if they wish to keep their rhymes as dope (or at least numerically accurate) as possible.
The new calling area would be a spinoff of the 843 area code – currently used by 21 of the state’s 46 counties (in the coastal and Pee Dee regions of the state).
Developed by AT&T and Bell Laboratories in the 1940?s, the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) is a telephone numbering system that went into effect in 1947. Originally, 86 area codes were issued – including 77 in the continental United States. Until December 1995, South Carolina was exclusively in one of those area codes – “the 803.” That was the year the Upstate region of the state received its own area code – “the 864.”
A little over two years later a coastal area code – “the 843” was added.
In December 2011, FITS launched an online poll seeking to determine which of the Palmetto State’s area codes was the best. Surprisingly, “the 803” won with 507 votes (39 percent) followed by “the 864” with 436 votes (34 percent). Bringing up the rear? “The 843” with only 357 votes (27 percent).
Really? That’s the exact opposite of how we’d rank them …

“Best Area Code?” …. seriously?
Not surprised 803 won, you talk mostly about stuff happening in Columbia after all when it comes to local news.
Wonder what the new area code will be, or what counties will use it.
SC should standardize it’s area code statewide, and the code should reflect the state of the State accordingly.
Hence, I nominate “911” for our new area code.
Folks in “The 843” gotst better things to do with their time, than voting on internet polls fo who gotst da bestis area code, Homes.
My vote for the Governor’s Mansion —- “666”
You stole my comment! =)
Ha! You can pick Nikki’s bedroom extension!
She would have two extensions shifty. Depneding on how you feel about her you could use either ext 69 or ext 86.
The real reason for the additional need of a new area code? OBAMA PHONES!!
843…”ate fo’ free”?
Does this mean we’ll get new phonebooks?
That was one of my favorite movie scenes. Especially when the guy who just wants to kill “somebody” starts shooting at him. Remember the defective oil cans? I needed a good laugh to start today! THANKS!
Here’s one on me. A few years back one of my best friends persuaded me to share a new apartment with his girlfriend. She wanted the phone in her name, but not her full name. So we decided to list it using my middle name and her last name with two additional letters at the end. This turned out to be a hoot. After the phone books came out, we got hundreds of calls from folks who wanted to know “is my car ready?” Subconsciously I made her last name similar to the last name of a guy who had worked on my car a few times. His first name was the same as my middle name, and he was listed alphabetically directly under ours.
Here’s a true story. Another friend didn’t want to pay extra to have an unlisted numbed. He listed his number using his dog’s name and the street name. To call him all one had to do was remember the street name. As an example, it would read as “Gracie Gervais.” Anyone asking to speak with Gracie were solicitation calls.
Directly reflects your audience. (803)non-productive govt workers( 864) private-sector lawyers and politician wanna-be’s (843) snow-birds and geriatrics who could give a shit
843 are a bunch of dicks.
