After an amazing year picking games in 2012, the FITS sports desk is 1-1 through the first weekend of 2013. We picked South Carolina to easily defeat North Carolina last Thursday – conjuring up a 34-12 Gamecock victory over the Tar Heels in our crystal ball.
That pick wasn’t too far off. In fact were it not for a disruptive two-hour weather delay we think it would have been on the money. Even with the delay, head coach Steve Spurrier’s team easily defeated the Tar Heels 27-10 – more than covering the 12.5-point Vegas line.
Two days later, though, we missed badly on the Clemson-Georgia game – predicting a 33-20 Bulldog victory.
Obviously that pick didn’t pan out as Heisman Trophy candidate Tajh Boyd and the Tigers beat Georgia 38-35.
This week odds makers have installed Georgia – which is playing its 2013 home opener – as a three-point favorite over the Gamecocks. And most of the social media projections we’ve seen – including a few from Gamecock fans – are also anticipating a good day for the red-and-black.
We’re not buying it …
Sure Georgia is pissed. They were humiliated a year ago against the Gamecocks in Williams Brice Stadium and were humiliated last weekend in Death Valley. They are team with nothing to lose – and everything to prove.
But guess who else comes into this game with something to prove? USC Heisman Trophy candidate Jadeveon Clowney, who had a less-than-stellar 2013 debut against North Carolina.
Georgia’s offensive line looked absolutely terrible against Clemson – whose front four defensive linemen are nowhere near as talented as the front four for South Carolina. So while Georgia has clear advantages at the offensive skill positions – the Gamecocks’ ability to control the line of scrimmage should effectively neutralize that edge.
Aaron Murray and the Bulldog offense will score some points, sure (especially with running back Todd Gurley at 100 percent following a quad injury last week against the Tigers) … but not enough.
As for the Gamecock offense, Spurrier kept it in low gear for most of the North Carolina game – keeping and the vast majority of the USC playbook in his back pocket. Expect him to open things up against an inexperienced Georgia defense. And expect the young Bulldog defenders to have even more trouble with Gamecock running back Mike Davis than they had against Clemson’s Roderick McDowell.
Davis is bigger and faster than McDowell … and is running behind a much better offensive line.
One final point: South Carolina has had two extra days to rest and prepare for Georgia – which as we’ve noted previously could be a critical (and overlooked) advantage for the Gamecocks.

Shifty sticks with a 45 – 35 Gamecock win over the Dawgs!!
It’s going to be a balls-to-the-walls, Katie-bar-the-door kind of game….
HEY! — it could have happened!
TBG prognosticates : Georgia 31, Sakerlina 27.
“Sakerlina”……….
Love that moniker!!!!!
Almost as good as South Cackalacky!!!
JJ chimes in with SC beating GA at 32 – 29; lump it Mr. ToBuGo! If SC loses(?) then I’ll post a video of me prancercising with the mall cop.
Yeah, I just can’t wait for that video!
TBG also can’t wait.
TBG thought, “lump it Mr. ToBuGo!”, was a bit harsh.
JJ offers his apology to TBG and retracts his “lump it” comment. Fueled by pre-game alcohol and feverishly praying for the SC victory, JJ leaped at the last person stating a GA win, and lashed out in a hasty, emotional outburst to a friend.
Please supply youtube link for the promised video
For some unknown reason mall cop is not returning my phone calls???
Cocks 21 Dawgs 17 Clowney 3 sacks
Clown(ey) has 1 sack in two games and 5 tackles total. At this rate he’ll finish the season with 6 sacks and 14-15 tackles. Will that get him as the #1 pick in the draft? If so I hope he loves his new team… likely the Jets, Raiders or Jaguars… if he’s extremely lucky maybe he’ll get to go to Cleveland.
They only gave up 538 yards! What a defense! What coaching! Cockadoodle doo, Suckers!
How ’bout 41-30, Georgia! Cockadoodle doo, Mo Fo’s!
“We are going to hang 55 on them Dawgs”. WHEN?
So is Clowney still in the Heisman watch? Or would he have a better chance of receiving a Rhodes Scholarship?
the Rhodes Scholarship
ba ha ha!!!
Payback is hell! Scar needs to stop all the trash talk. lol! Go dawgs!
For sixty-seven years, I have waited for South Carolina to win some national prize in football. Frankly, watching them in the UNC game, I knew it would not be this year. Now, I wonder if we will have a strong winning season. Maybe if we sacrifice one of the progressive professors.. since there are no virgins..
progressive professors at Carolina in 2013? Ha. Dracula needs virgins, too:

I’ve long been satisfied with,Dan Reeves, and got no expectations..
Dan was a great friend of my father’s since his Carolina days when dad used to assist his exit from the clutches of the 5-points cops. Dad helped recruit Dan since they were both from the Rome GA, area. He was supposed to date my sister, but she got called away to interview with AADA, and they never did get back together. He used to eat supper with us, occasionally, though not nearly as much as Alex Hawkins or Alex Sanders did. My most favorite Reeves moment was 2003, when he signed a football for dad wishing him an 87th birthday. He kept me in his office, where they were practicing at Furman, for over an hour regaling me with stories of dad at Carolina. Good times.
It’s great that you have those memories to share!!
Or maybe I’m just getting old and boring.
Nope – hopefully everyone has some interesting tales to pass on to their kinfolks. One of mine was being the escort for Bob Hayes (Dallas Cowboys) when he did a tour for the USO in the Mediterranean. Local athletes could challenge him, but the only thing they could tell was that they lost to Hayes and then have their photo taken with him laughing! He hardly broke a sweat – he was having fun, sharing stories, and it was one of my best assignments. I’ll have to find my photos.
My only other football memory is breaking my wrist and twisting my ankle during Super Bowl XVII.
You manned up and played through it, right?
I was fired up and the excitement of the game was so intense that I didn’t go to the emergency room until after the game. Actually, what happened was that I was getting a beer from the fridge when I tripped over my dog.
Not to be outdone, I need to brag about my World Series perfect game back in 1913… that was a day I’ll never forget.
—- and that would be Game #6 on Sunday, October 12th?
Cool!
Priceless,as they say.That was another country…
Awwww……..so sad to see the chickens lose their first big game this year. :(
Well crap. So many times we screwed up. Very disappointing.
Hmmmmmmm … Lets see .. I think that takes it to 47-17-2 … Hahahahaha … What a joke … That ACC banner still hanging in stadium though !!! Hahahahahahah
41-30 UGA. Easy prediction. West will out rush Gurley….UGA staff will make USC staff look silly. Just a guess.

How ’bout them Dawgs??? They flogged the Cocks!
Yeah,well.
and BOOM! goes the dynamite
Will be interesting which film the old ball coach reviews with the Team this week
My choice is the dust up between the two coaches
They appear to be the only two sons of bitches who give a rat’s ass and have the energy to do anything other than walk around with their hands on their hips gasping for air
Give me a C
Give me a O
Give me a C
Give me a K
Give me a S
What do you have – Pussy
Only two games into the season and I heard my first, “Wait ’til next year” comment from a Gamecock fan. Forget 2001 and Sandstorm, the biggest tradition at USC is a toss-up between leaving at halftime and the “wait ’til next year” war cry.
ATTENTION GAMECOCKS!
I have it on good authority that a new shipment of garnet KOOLAID is in transit to Columbia. Drink it quickly!
I think that you should all get “on point” and say that “the Georgia team that USC played Saturday would have beaten Clemson 70 to nothing”.
I hope y’all enjoyed your time in the top 10. See you in November. BTW. We don’t “fear the thumb”. In fact we will stick it up y’all’s ass on national TV.
Will, your off to a great start in your picks.
Are Gamecock fans more bi-polar than any other football fan base? I mean, just read the game threads in the forums, the other team scores one touchdown and we suck and the season is over, then on the next USC drive we score a touchdown and suddenly we’re in contention for the national championship. Then the other team gets the ball back and they march down the field and suddenly we suck again and we need to start firing coaches. It’s a fun thread to read however.
well, at least you had the 11 point spread right. win a championship and we’ll talk.
Back to reality…
Get use to guys…
Dawgs are pretty close to where Darth Visor used to be at UF – reloading…
Cocks cannot say that – not close…
And Stevie isn’t getting any younger.
