S.C. Senator Katrina Shealy says small businesses in South Carolina face “unsustainable” health care price increases as a result of the implementation of U.S. President Barack Obama’s socialized medicine law.
Appearing at a press event at a local glass shop in Columbia, S.C., Shealy cited a recent S.C. Department of Insurance report which predicted average rate increases of 50-70 percent – part of the Obamacare “rate shock” we predicted two months ago.
“Employers have no idea how to budget for the future – all they get are (premium) increase warnings, but they still have no actual premiums for next year,” Shealy said. “Businesses will not grow or hire because of this delay. New business will not start.”
Shealy blistered S.C. Sen. Vincent Sheheen for his support of the Medicaid expansion associated with Obamacare.
“If labor unions are now vocally against Obamacare and Vincent Sheheen still hasn’t figured it out he has a serious problem,” Shealy said. “Is Vincent really that uneducated about the issue? Or has he been living under a rock, to not know how bad Obamacare is for South Carolina?”
Shealy added that Sheheen was “not the person the business community and South Carolina needs leading us in 2014.”
We agree … but S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley (who has also supported huge Medicaid expansions) hasn’t exactly been good for business either.
A report released earlier this year ranked South Carolina as one of the worst states in America try and make a living. Other recent reports showed the Palmetto State as having a terrible business tax climate as well as zero upward mobility for its citizens. Meanwhile the state’s labor participation rate is hovering at record lows.
And while Haley has been more than willing to throw taxpayer money at large corporations, a recent analysis of private sector job creation among America’s governors ranked her No. 34 out of 45 (five governors were excluded from the study because they took office in 2013). However one of those five governors, North Carolina’s Pat McCrory, recently signed a massive $2.5 billion tax cut – which will only further diminish South Carolina’s competitive position.

Did Katrina learn this at the ALEC conference she attended in Chicago last week?
Katrina sure is working hard to attack Haley’s enemies, that’s for sure.
Wonder if she paid her own way there.
As much as anyone else I am sure!

Shifty loves following political battles second only to college football! Will, please keep us posted…….
EJB thinks Shifty Henry is doing the third person stuff like TBG.
Since TBG was funnin’ Sic’s “our founding editor”, on a whim I thought we could start a trend with the commentators, but nobody followed up on it. Anyway, it’s difficult to keep thinking of oneself in the third person.

If she did learn it at ALEC – that would be more than some of her colleagues “learned” there. From what I understand at least She attended the meetings!!!
When are Democrats across the country, other than Yancey McGill and that guy in Michigan or Wisconsin, going to start joining ALEC and expose all of the dirty dealings to the light of day?
State residents really need to know when they habitually elect people who care more about copying template bills about national issues rather than addressing the real problems of the states they are elected to govern.
Senator Kent Williams was an ALEC attendee

Go up on the rates. Under Obamacare, insurance companies are required to spend 80% of the premiums collected on the insured.

How is that different from any other year?
“small businesses” will pay more. you mean “small business owners” will pay more. sorry, charlie, i’m crying for you… who will benefit are the millions of “small business workers” who are uninsured or underinsured. hurrah!
Actually Edith, Republicans think the workers should not count. They are not job creators. So yes, small business means small business owners. But ask them one more question. What do you mean by small business. You might be surprised to find that Republicans think a company with 500 employees is a small business.
The truth is most real small business owners, will not pay more. They will have more options and pay less.

I was told Bob Peeler was fishing for support to run against Shealy or Ronnie Cromer?
Boy the slugs in the Republican party just cannot seem to go away!
One of my friends was approached about this too.
He was nice; but, remembered his affair and relationship to Danny Frazier and James Metts. He told me no way!

Repubs are holding these meetings in every district. They brought a BC/BS rep to ours. When pressed on specifics she had no answer. When asked how the increase estimates were made she again had no answer. She could however quote the republican talking points. Haley and Davis have done their part to raise rates by refusing to expand Medicaid.
We will not know the rates until Oct 1 but private policy holders can get an estimate now by visiting healthcare.gov and follow the link to the Kaiser Foundation.

Shealy is just a GOP racist hack. Nothing more! She doesn’t give a damn about SC, or its citizens. Most of whom are poor, or almost poor, and mostly white. She shoots her mouth off about Obama Care, and she knows nothing about it. Plus: name one thing that she says could make it better. One idea! Nothing, she has nothing except NO. No ideas, the No idea party: GOP! Full of big talk, no ideas, and no progress! Just keep soaking the middle class for money for their Koch Brother’s Puppet Masters.
If they can’t come up with better ideas, then shut the he(( up!
You described the Dimmycrats to a t.

The bottom line is that working, tax payers will pay for Obamacare. It does not matter if it goes under the name of expanded Medicaid, subsidized health insurance exchanges, etc, someone has to pay. Anyone who believed that the net cost of the plan would be “0” was delusional. Once again, the government is taking money from working individuals (businesses really pay NO taxes) and giving it to other people. Drug and insurance companies are raising their prices now to protect against the loss of profits they know are coming as the government moves to set prices. Remember free markets? Free markets, and the innovative products that they produced are already passing into a memory. Remember those famous words…”I’m here from the government and I’m here to help?
So Kirby, enlighten us.
How would you deal with people who are sick and cannot afford insurance or to pay the doctor? What makes you think they are not working?
While you are at it,
How would you deal with people who cannot afford to construct a private road from their home to their place of work or to a source of food?
money is more important than a life?

Former House Speaker and presidential candidate Newt Gingrich reprimanded his fellow Republicans in unusually harsh terms Wednesday, blaming GOP members of Congress for developing “zero” alternatives to President Obama’s health care reform law.

Must have been a bad day. The Republicans allowed a moment of truth to go public.

Hoo Ray for Senator Shealy! Sheheen does not live under a rock, he lives on his gilded lilly pad.
Harry Reid said last week in that the Affordable Care Act is a stepping stone to a single payer system. What else do we need to know? Watch Sen Scott spell it out in yesterday’s interview with Greta.

My sister lost her job , then her insurance, and then her life in 2011, this would not have happened if there had been Obamacare. How much is a life worth? If I were a rich Republican I would look for a very small camel and a large needle.
