SC Among “Worst Places” To Make A Living

In reviewing the S.C. Democratic Party’s latest pop on Gov. Nikki Haley’s economic record, we noted a reference to South Carolina having been “named one of the hardest place(s) in America to make a living.” We thought we were familiar with all of the Palmetto State’s crappy ratings, but this was a new one for us.

Turns out the ranking is from April 2013, when the website Money Rates released a list of the best and worst states in which to “make a living.” South Carolina ranked No. 45 out of fifty states on the list, which included this not-so-glowing recommendation …

A combination of low wages and high unemployment have landed South Carolina in the bottom ten twice before, and those conditions persist. In addition, people in the state gave it the country’s fifth-worst rating for quality of work environment.

Ouch …

According to another recent report, Haley ranks 34th out of 45 governors surveyed when it comes to private sector job creation (five governors were not ranked because they entered office in 2013). Also, South Carolina’s labor participation rate is nearly five percent lower than the national rate – which itself is hovering at three-decade lows.

Other recent reports showed the Palmetto State as having a terrible business tax climate as well as zero upward mobility for its citizens.

Ah yes .. once again, “it’s a great day in South Carolina.” The state that’s “just right.”

I took a look at the list to see which states were in the top half. Wyoming, Minnesota (do you like lots of snow and bitter cold?), Nebraska (infinite miles of nothing), Utah (if you ain’t Mormon, why?), Oklahoma (tornado alley), Iowa (like corn fields?), North Dakota (yea right). So sorry Charlie I will stick the poor old Palmetto state.

You seem to have a reason not to go to any of the top states… fine, stay in this hot, humid shithole of a state full of mouth-breathing inbreds, most of who’s life became not worth living the day Dale Earnhardt died. I’m sure those midwest states appreciate you staying right where you are.

Have you ever been to any of those states? I’ve been to all of the ones you listed and there’s a reason they’re at the top and SC is at the bottom. The citizen’s work ethic is one of them… unlike the citizens of this multi-generational welfare state.

I only have 3 of the 50 left on my bucket list. OK, WVA and Montana. So your answer is generally yes. If SC is so disagreeable to you, then why the hell are you still here? There is a big difference between “going to” a state and living there, or didn’t you know?

Because the state pays me a shitload of money to do what I do. I have a few years left then I’m going to take my SC state retirement funds and move to one of the states you apparently do not like.

So if you’ve visited 47 states, what draws you to this state that you consider the best of the best?

And yes I’ve lived in two of those states that you find unworthy of your citizenship. The only state that I’ve lived in that I think sucks worse than SC is Georgia… and not by that much.

Being a native of SC (Charleston) I have a comfort level in that I am familiar with who, what, when, where. There are other places that I find interesting. LA (the state not the town), Houston, San Diego and the Bay area of northern CA but the government and the cost of living would keep me from there. I ain’t into cold weather, so going “north” would not appeal to me. My observation is that most folk, believe it or not, gravitate to the vicinity of where they are from. The exception is the Yankees escaping the cold.

T-Rav is that you???

CNSYD August 1, 2013 at 9:21 pm

Not even close. I knew his Dad and one of the original West Ashley Ravenels (Mr, Charles Ravenel). That’s why I know that Lenevar is Ravenel spelled backwards. Fortunately I have never seen T-Rav in the flesh and hope I never do.

So you knew my grandfather? Mr. Charlie who once owned Lenevar when it was strawberry fields… obviously not forever.

CNSYD August 2, 2013 at 9:51 am

Yes I did but when I was a young lad. It was my father who was friends with him. When we moved into our new house in 1956, Mr. Charlie told us to come over to his place and dig up all the grass/sod we needed to sprig the yard. That was my first interaction with him.

Your credibility tanked when you made the comment “Because the state pays me a shitload of money to do what I do”. State employee and shitload of money are never used in agreement. You are entitled to your opinion regarding the quality of living in SC. However, I have been to all of the lower 48 and lived in eight different states (including the midwest) and would say that mid-atlantic states are the most attractive spots. Best of luck in your retirement!

How many state employees make six figure salaries? Take a look at the SC state salary website, you’ll go through about 5-6 pages of employees before you drop off the six-figure mark. I guess a “shitload” to you doesn’t start until you hit seven-figures.

This whole business about low wages is rubbish. In New York, where the average working wage is the highest in America, the COST of living is the highest in America. There is NO ESCAPING higher prices with the advent of higher wages. Excess cash always causes rising prices. Democrats do not understand this.

I could probably increase my salary by 30% if I were willing to move to Charlotte or Atlanta but the trade-offs aren’t worth the extra money.

If you have failed to make a decent living, you are a dumbass and should commit suicide so as to stop wasting oxygen.

Immigrants legal or otherwise come to the US and do well, but many Americans fail at life. Tough shit, cry me a river.

SC by the way LEADS the US in foreign investment. Capital is flowing here and it’s no accident tire companies (for example) choose SC.

That doesn’t mean there will be jobs for slugs. Learn a skill people will pay you to use or eat shit and die.

The question needs to be asked regarding, why? Why does South Carolina continues to perform at such a rate compared to its other southern counterparts within the region? In this answer, you will find the solution to address this problem!
