By a 7-6 vote, the executive board of the Charleston International Airport named S.C. Sen. Paul Campbell (RINO-Berkeley) as the airport’s new executive director this week.
The vote was a major defeat for S.C. Rep. Chip Limehouse (RINO-Charleston) – who coveted the position for himself.
Campbell replaces Sue Stevens, who announced her resignation from the $211,000 a year taxpayer-funded post earlier this month citing verbal abuse and disrespectful treatment at the hands of two board members (one of which was allegedly Limehouse).
In a surprise turn of events, Campbell said he would not resign his seat in the South Carolina Senate – claiming he could manage the airport remotely from Columbia, S.C. while the state’s General Assembly is in session from January through June.
Really?
It’s corrupt enough that a sitting state lawmaker is “landing” (<– bad airport pun) this gig in the first place, but now he’s going to double-dip? How cozy …

I did not realize that there were Republican and Democratic airlines and airplanes. Must be if the political affiliation of the airport authority executive director matters. BTW, if you had read the msm days ago, you would have seen that Campbell said he was not giving up his Senate seat IF he got the job.

1. Airports get lots of Federal money. Why is Campbell not covered by the Federal Hatch Act witch would forbid him to retain his office.
2. His state retirement as a Senator would be based on $17,000. If he stays three years at Airport it would be based on $211,000. This job means he will get a little more than a $100,000 in retirement from the airport alone.
3. This is an affront to working people everywhere.
Schools, colleges, etc. get federal funds. If the Hatch Act worked as you are asking, the number of people affected would be large. I tend to think it is not applicable to the situation you describe.

All governmental subdivision in SC are part of the “State” retirement system. Some non-profits, and some Authorities like Ports Authority and Santee Cooper dip into the system as well. Of course, public colleges and universities too.

I’ll be the first to say it. You may disagree with his politics, but Paul Campbell is as good of a person as you’re going to come across. If I could pluck one person out of the entire General Assembly and put them in the Governor’s Office, it would be Campbell. Low bar, I know, but he’s the only practical person in the entire building.

Charleston County Aviation Authority is not taxpayer funded, unless you consider the FAA. However, CCAA does not receive local taxes, operations are primarily funded by parking and tenant rental. They are under SCRS. As outlined, an employee would be eligible for benefits after 8 years of service as a new employee in SCRS. Combined service is considered.
