Former U.S. Representative and New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner’s comeback bid may already be over …

The disgraced congressman – whose career collapsed in 2011 due to a Twitter sexting scandal – has admitted engaging in similar behavior with yet another women. In fact one website – TheDirty.com – has posted numerous images of alleged X-rated exchanges between Weiner and the woman, who is described in news reports as a 22-year-old “state-level blogger.”

Whoa …

This time, Weiner is coming clean regarding the allegations against him – at least partially.

“While some things that have been posted today are true and some are not, there is no question that what I did was wrong,” Weiner said in response to the release of the messages. “This behavior is behind me.”

Is it though? According to the woman who participated in the alleged exchanges, Weiner was “sexting” her through August 2012 – more than a year after he resigned his office.

Obviously the timing of these messages is going to be critical for Weiner – who is married to Huma Abedin, the extremely attractive former aide to Hillary Clinton. Weiner and Abedin have a son together, who was born shortly after her husband’s sexting scandal broke.

“If they were sent before (his sexting scandal), then the messages likely won’t hurt Weiner much, as they’re just newly unearthed artifacts from an era for which he has already repented and been forgiven,” writes Salon‘s Alex Seitz-Wald. “However, if his six-month relationship with the anonymous woman came after the scandal, Weiner’s credibility, mayoral hopes and possibly even marriage could crumble overnight.”

Weiner’s original scandal began when he accidentally tweeted an image of his erect penis … and then tried to claim his Twitter account had been hacked. Weiner’s account hadn’t been hacked, though- he just had a case of slippery fingers. Weeks later he resigned from Congress over the scandal, acknowledging that he had carried on sexually-themed flirtations with several women – including a porn star – and lied about it.

Not only that, Weiner was coaching the women to lie to the media too …

Weiner’s comeback bid appeared to be gathering momentum – although he was still trailing New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn in recent polls prior to these latest revelations. It’s obviously unclear at this point what sort of impact this scandal will have on his ambitions.

Remember, S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford was able to survive a rehash of his infamous bad judgment in capturing a special election for the Palmetto State’s first congressional district earlier this year. Trailing by nearly ten points with less than two weeks to go before Election Day, Sanford appeared dead in the water – unable to get out of his own way after trespassing allegations made by his ex-wife revived chatter about his personal life (and doubts about his fitness for office).

He wound up winning the race by nearly ten points …
