South Carolina taxpayers just can’t catch a break …
For eight years they had a governor willing to wield a mighty veto pen – yet not enough lawmakers willing to support his pro-taxpayer efforts. Now there are more than enough lawmakers willing to uphold gubernatorial vetoes – yet South Carolina is saddled with a chief executive who refuses to use them to cut government.
S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley – who campaigned on a fiscally conservative “Tea Party” platform – issued barely $100 million worth of vetoes this week (out of a $22.7 billion budget). For those of you keeping score at home, that’s less than one half of one percent of the state budget.
Or .44 percent to be precise …
Wow … and this is the candidate who ran on limited government? And protecting taxpayers?
Talk about underwhelming …
In fact Haley went so far as to join “Republicans in Name Only” in the South Carolina Senate in approving a $26 million appropriation for U.S. President Barack Obama’s signature education initiative – an expansion of the state’s failed government-run early childhood education programs.
Things weren’t supposed to be this way … not this year. Haley met repeatedly with fiscally conservative state lawmakers who assured her they would uphold her vetoes – and she promised them she would wield a bigger axe this year.
She didn’t …
Last year Haley issued seventy-four budget vetoes totaling less than $60 million – or one quarter of one percent of the state’s $23 billion budget. The previous year she cut just $213 million – or less than one percent of that year’s $22.1 billion spending plan.
Pitiful … just pitiful.

Well: if you’re correct FITS, you’ll get your wish. She’ll be Gov. One-Term…
My guess is Haley will “Get Fiscal” (my apologies to Olivia Neutron Bomb)….next year…just before she goes out begging to be re-elected…
That said: Loftis has said No…Davis is a Liberal-Tarain, so he has no chance (learned our lesson w/ Sanford)… Scott was put in the US Senate, so he’s not a factor…who does that Leave???…And Obama has destroyed ANY democrat’s chances for the next century.,…
“Learned our lesson w/ Sanford?” Pardon me, but didn’t he just get elected to the U.S. Congress from S.C.? Those voters didn’t learn shit.
Ouch!!
Hey Dumb@$$: There’s a BIG difference in getting elected in a Liberal-Tarian-type Congressional district and getting elected Statewide after his performance….
Haley is in an office elected STATEWIDE. Greenville, Spartanburg, and all…Idiot…
Hate to slap the P!$$ out of yours, and Sex Wax’s Ignorant @$$ like that. But when you’re Stupid, and open your mouth, you may get schooled….
You’re aware that a U.S. Congressman, though he be elected from a certain district, represents the interests of the entire state once he gets to D.C, right? That’s why candidates don’t even have to live in the district in which they’re running – they just have to live in the state. Yeah, I’m pretty sure the U.S. Congress is more prestigious than any “STATEWIDE” office in S.C.
Really, you should leave your mom’s basement once in a while.
You don’t talk to my boy that way!
He loves me and that’s why he lives here. It has nothing to do with his inability to adjust to society.
A congressional election is, if I may be allowed, a whole buttload easier to run and win than an election for guber. Especially in a state like South Carolina. You have a fifth of the state thinking they belong to North Carolina, a fifth of the state thinking they live on Sesame Street, a fifth of the state who think conservatively – but once a year think they are brie eating artsy fartsy Italy, and a fifth of the state thinks they are in an L Neil Smith Alternate Earth Novel and everybody carries. But Congressional races are fun and easy in comparison to races for guv. One good thing about SC, if you don’t push us, we don’t care what religion you are or what color or what country you come from or what you do in the dark with consenting others. Just don’t push us.
Incidentally, this is why we need five different TEA parties working in this state, together, against Lindsey.
And yes, I should know.
You are VERY Right about that. Otherwise, we would not be burdened with Jim Clyburn….
Yes. which is the fifth fifth of the state. (did we just agree on something?)
GrandTango: I’ve been having a good day until I read your rants, but they did remind me of a stress management technique recommended in the latest psychological texts (the funny thing is, it really works):
I picture myself near a stream. Birds are softly chirping in the cool mountain air. No one but me knows my secret place. I am in total seclusion from the hectic place called “the world”. The soothing sound of a gentle waterfall fills the air with a cascade of serenity. The water is crystal clear.
I can easily make out the face of the person I’m holding under water

South Carolina’s government is about as limited as it gets…as evidenced by our placement near the bottom of every list at which being at the bottom is in fact a bad thing.
Nice try, though.
There ain’t no “there” there. It is all talk as she bankrolls millions in pacs, charities and campaign accounts.
Jokes on you.

The irony is, if she were serious about her small-government, limited spending “philosophy”, I would probably be willing to stomach a lot of budget cuts. I wouldn’t like them, but I could respect them enough to not gripe about it.
For Governor Nimrata to cut less than one-half of one percent of the budget just so she can fuck over issues she doesn’t like (the arts, health care initiatives, etc.) is utter bullshit. What’s $100M in the grand scheme of that budget? Nothing.
Can’t wait for the Arts Commission rally! Hope it doesn’t interfere with my moving!

Many years ago a CEO convinced his company’s board that he was so vital to the operations that they purchased a helicopter and hired pilots just to fly him back and forth to work, a 15 minute round trip.
Soon after the completion of helipads at his home and the company’s Headquarters the CEO was airborne
A few months later the company announced the firing of the CEO. It seems that he padded his expense account to the tune of less than $100 and the Board decreed his greed too excessive
For the life of me I know there is a correlation between this story and the one posted about the Governor’s budget cuts but I can’t come up with one
Well I always liked that story and I am happy that I finally got to use it

When you say how much Trikki vetoes, you really need to just state the amount of SC money that the legislature appropriates and exclude the federal. Getting the percentage on that would be an honest percentage. But, you and Mark always loved lying about and manipulating figures.

There’s a hell of a difference in governing after the election and running in the election. The rubber meets the road after election and the reality of fact trumps bullshit.
Not that it has registered in “The Founding Editor’s” mind.

Try AP style. 1 percent is clearer than once percent.
If only STYLE were the problem…

She isn’t failing the people who voted for her, they are getting exactly what was advertised: a woman with allegations of having affairs, backed by Sanford and Palin, who had questionable associations with various groups in which they seemingly paid her big bucks to “do nothing” while a state legislator. Under no circumstances had she ever shown she intended to cut the budget or cut taxes other than meaningless lip service for the Tea Party morons that wouldn’t vote Democrat anyways.
8 years of Sanford and quite likely 8 years of Haley. This is what SC wants. Let them have it.

I wonder how much is in the budget to continue to try and repair the DOR mess Haley and her limited government crew created?

Gov. Nikki Haley issued 81 vetoes to the state budget on Tuesday, reducing the state’s $22.7 billion budget by about $100 million. Read more here: http://www.thestate.com/#storylink=cpy
The BIG thing is EXPANDING 4-K…that’s just free child Care for government workers, who would rather let an inferior state program have their children…
Tells me, Haley is eyeing some sort of national office, because she’s scared that would be used against her, if she vetoed it…
It is time for a change. Sanford went back in office and had no respect for his family and the people of South Carolina. If things are going to get better in this state, the people of South Carolina has to make better decisions on election day. Haley is for her buddies and herself. Lets all of us on election day make better decisions.
