Less than a week after this website revealed the existence of a secret taxpayer-funded late night taxi service for inebriated and/or lazy South Carolina legislators, the free rides have come to an end – at least in the S.C. House of Representatives.
According to one of our well-placed sources at the state capitol building, “they (have) stopped doing Sergeant at Arms ‘after hours after hours,'” referring to the ferrying of lawmakers to and from various special interest receptions and downtown Columbia, S.C. bars on your dime.
“Thanks a lot,” one lawmaker us indignantly.
As we reported last weekend, the S.C. House Sergeant at Arms office maintains a fleet consisting of “several (Ford) Crown Vics and two (Chevy) Tahoes” which it uses for its late night lawmaker taxi service. The existence of this fleet came to light after S.C. Rep. Ted Vick (D-Chesterfield) – a former congressional candidate – was busted last week for his second DUI in less than a year. Asked whether he usually drove drunk, Vick told arresting officers “no, I have drivers.”
Hopefully the S.C. Senate will follow the House’s lead and get rid of these superfluous vehicles – with the proceeds going into a taxpayer rebate fund.
Of course this is corrupt as hell South Carolina … which means that’s wishful thinking. In fact as we write this we’re sure lawmakers are already plotting “alternative arrangements” for their late night travel needs.

Wow, I’m sure that’ll save us a few dollars. How about revamping the state retirement system– like maybe using the total time spent in the system to determine the benefit vs. basing the benefit on the highest three tears? Or not letting years as an elected offical count.
But how will I get a ride? :)

Man, that potential/theoretical/fantasmagorical taxpayer rebate fund keeps growing, and growing and growing … kind of like Alice after she ate or drank whatever down in that rabbit hole.
Buz, have you got a copy of how this rebate system will work? I have continuously asked Sic Willie for a copy but none seems to be forthcoming. Maybe it will be in Sic Willie’s book on his alleged affair with Haley.
Or maybe in the file cabinet with all those ‘investigations’ FITS keeps promising.

Want to get really pissed off, get the info on legislative retirement and how much taxpayer money goes to subsidize it, number of years to be vested, how you can purchase additional years at very little cost. How many are still serving and drawing retirement and how indistrict expense is counted toward retirement!
Eye opening, selfserving and lucrative for them. Then they go to lobbying, draw retirement, get special bennies. etc.
One good end around they use when people complain if they contemplate giving a pay increase is to either remove the increase or minimize it and then they change the percentage the state contributes to their retirement fund. Last time I read anything about the differences (10 years ago) their contribution percent was 3 times greater than school teachers. I would be interested to know what the various matches are now.

Now they will just get arrested and have to pull strings to get off. An extra step.

I am assuming that Ted’s license was suspended for 6 months due to the fact that he refused the breathalizer. Anyone know? I guess he will now be called moped-ted.

yeah, SC is corrupt as hell. But, it is still pure as the driven snow compared to what VA governor Bob (the most plastic hair since Carroll Campbell) McDonnell and VA Attorney General (& just nominated as GOP candidate for Gov) Cuccinnelli have been up to in Virginia. They’re being investigated by the FBI.
