Colbert-Busch: Mark Sanford Is “Henny Penny”

This week’s much-anticipated debate between Mark Sanford and Elizabeth Colbert-Busch in the topsy-turvy South Carolina first congressional district wound up being quite the dud … if you’re a supporter of free markets, anyway.

If you like crony capitalism it was no doubt an enjoyable exchange … as both candidates expressed their support for more of the same failed top-down command economic planning.

(To read our recap of the debate, click here).

Anyway … while the candidates are obviously on the same page when it comes to picking winners and losers in the economy, they differ dramatically in their outlook regarding the future of the American Republic.

Sanford – regurgitating one of his favorite new phrases – said during his closing statement of his debate that our civilization was at a “tipping point.”

Not so, Colbert-Busch maintained.

“The sky is not falling, Henny Penny,” she said during her closing statement, referring to Sanford. “Our best days are ahead of us.”

Henny Penny, of course, is an iteration of “Chicken Little” – the fear-mongering fowl of folk tale fame who attempts to convince his fellow animals that the sky is falling after an acorn lands on his head.

So … which candidate is right? Vote in our poll and post your thoughts in our comments section below …

This poll question seems disingenuous. How about Is America likely to approach a debt tipping point? Yes or No.

Since Reinhart-Rogoff and their “tipping point” numbers that have been the basis for ALL of the GOP hysteria over the debt have been found to be the result of an Excel “error”, cherry picking data, and cooking books in general – by a grad student, no less – it’s the whole “tipping point” meme that’s disingenuous.

Most folks who say the growing debt crisis threatens our way of life aren’t necessarily saying that America’s best days are behind us, just that they COULD be if we’re not careful. That’s an entirely different statement.

ECB believes its the governments job to provide jobs! She is a radical liberal who wants high taxes, abortion on demand and believes the 2nd amendment can be infringed!

In addition to this her payback to the unions will be to ship those jobs at Boeing to Seattle where the unions are demanding them from Pelsoi and the Democrats. Sanford will protect them when he joins the House majority.

So let me get this right: She’s pro-choice, would not support the reppeal of the “train wreck” Obamacare, wants to restrict the 2nd amendment, is supported by unions that want to shut down Boeing’s Charleston factory moving the thousands of jobs to Democrat Oregon where they diss South Carolinian workers and would be a reliable vote for liberal Nancy Pelosi in Congress which is why they’ve given her over a million dollars.

Her supporters can spin it any way they want but she would be a disaster for the taxpayers and residents of SC-1.

The only vote is for Republican Mark Sanford.

Taxpayers? Well, we’re talking about the guy that had the taxpayers pick up the tab for him to fly down business class to S America with an entourage so he could get laid, right? Oh and the guy that took the state plane to birthday parties, campaign events and even to get his hair cut? This was at the same time he was furloughing state employees. Obamacare is raising premiums 80% and as Democrat Senator from Montana Baucus who wrote the law said is a “train wreck” which must be repealed. Sanford will vote and work to repeal and ECB won’t.

The choice has never been clearer. If you like your health insurance and don’t want to pay 80% more or even worse lose it from your employer which is also likely then vote for the Republican Mark Sanford not the Pelosi stooge.

“Obamacare is raising premiums 80%”

Well, that sounds ominous. And sounds very authoritative. Can you provide a source for said Apocalypse? The highest I’ve seen is 32% in a study by the Society for Actuaries. It’s been passed around the conservative echo chamber as fact, but largely panned as nonsense by everyone with a passing knowledge of the law. It’s also for individual plans, not employer plans. Beside, inflation in healthcare grew by the same rate (32%) from 2005 to 2012. So this isn’t something new.

Max Baucus: ““That was interpreted as meaning I thought the bill was a train wreck. It’s not a train wreck. I was not referring to the bill. I was referring to if we don’t implement this thing correctly, then it’s going to be a train wreck.”

Well, there goes one of your reliable talking points.

And who exactly is coming for your insurance? Is it the people that flew the black helicopters during the Clinton Administration? Or is the people compiling gun confiscation lists?

Sanford is your guy. You both live in alternate realities.

mph April 30, 2013 at 4:36 pm

No. Not least because the article says no such thing.

You asserted that the healthcare premiums will go up across the board by 80% and then link to an opinion piece in a conservative newspaper that never says anything of the sort. Yes, according to the author, premiums will go up among some groups. But your 80% percent assertion was created from whole cloth.

Max Baucus quote: “It’s not a train wreck. I was not referring to the bill. I was referring to if we don’t implement this thing correctly, then it’s going to be a train wreck.”

Beside, it’s not going to be repealed. The Dems control the Senate (and the filibuster if they lose it) and Obama has the veto that requires 67 votes in the Senate to override. Barring they rewrite the constitution, ain’t going to happen.

You should google School House Rocks. It’ll help.

How long until the next election? During that time period, Sanford can do a lot of damage to fiscal conservatism. His poor example will be used as a rationale NOT to move toward austerity measures. The democratic dogs are on the hunt for easy pickings.
During that same time period, ECB will either be an independent voice as she claims or show her true colors as we suspect. Maybe before she goes she will get the Port situation squared away. This is short term stint of an election and should not be tied up with social issues, IMHO. They are just a distraction.
