We’ve written extensively recently about budget shortfalls and layoffs at S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley’s chronically mismanaged Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW).
For those of you unfamiliar with the Palmetto State’s ever-expanding maze of alphabet soup bureaucracies, this is the agency which doles out federal unemployment benefits … badly, at that.
(Cue boilerplate) Last year SCDEW doled out $54.5 million in “improper claims” according to data from the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL). In fact over the last three years the agency has an improper payment rate of 14.7 percent – one of the highest in the nation.
Who’s picking up the tab for this incompetence? South Carolina businesses and taxpayers.
Abraham Turner – Haley’s first choice to lead SCDEW – resigned his post last month in disgrace, and a search is currently underway for his replacement.
Anyway, we were recently forwarded a copy of the agency’s proposed “restructuring plan,” which is the impetus for all the recent layoffs …

Frankly we have no problem with SCDEW’s efforts. If the agency is in fact reducing its overhead and providing services more efficiently, we’re all for that. Our problem? The elevated numbers of South Carolinians who don’t have jobs due to the failed policies of our state’s leaders.
Oh, and is SCDEW was this bloated and this inefficient, why didn’t Haley do something about it … you know, more than two years ago?

Do believe you can stop posting stories about DEW. Nobody really gives a shit anymore. The same can be said about SC State and Jim Clyburn.
There are some events, things, happenings, institutions that fall into the category, that’s the fucking way it is and nothing, absolutely nothing, is going to change the status quo

I give a shit, because I’m getting laid off from SCDEW! Again, the restructuring is due to fiscal mismanagement from AJT. This modle is the “best” Columbia could come up with, using the money left to the Agency. Finan is a Finance guy and that’s why he’s here, to clean up after Turner.
I don’t GAS. I think the whole thing should be shut down. Less unemployment insurance stolen from employers will surely result in more private sector jobs created and many fewer BA/BS degreed middle manager polit bureau types to strong arm the working class.

It’s not about providing better services, it’s about reducing Dew workforce and making it harder for the unemployed to get help filing for unemployment benefits. Those without computers in the non hub areas are shit out of luck if they need help.

SCDEW is a waste of time IMHO. The best jobs are found elsewhere, For example, Monster, recruiting firms such as FGP (Find Great People), Newspaper Ads or just going to businesses you want to work for and filling out an application. As a former veteran who promised job preference, and databases to look through – a waste of time if you care about your bottom line.

What should have happened if anybody had an ounce of brains was to hire within the agency that knew actually something about the work and workers. They should have never hired from outside who knew nothing about the agency. Turner and Vining are jokes. This comment comes from someone who worked there for 15 years. The reason i left was because of new management. They are firing the people who helped build the agency.

And again who is going to be doing the work? Not the HIGH paid people who sit in Columbia, they don’t even know what goes on in the local workforce areas. Soon there will be no one to help the unemployed

DEW is a joke. I don’t think anyone argues that. Their attempt to “restructure” is their attempt to avert the attention away from all the over paid management in the central office. They’re attempting the layoff’s in the cover of “it’s not our fault” and blaming local areas and other organizations.

If an FTE is a part of this restructuring plan, what if any grievence rights do they have? Seems the agency may be setting the state up for a major lawsuit…

That was a joke, I went to a local town hall meeting just after the rates were announced, because I work for a small accounting firm, when our clients started bringing in their notices of the new rates we did the math our jaws hit the floor when we realized what some companies were facing. To make a long story short, the representatives at this meeting played “dumb” – to the rates they voted on- I asked them if anyone in Columbia had a calculator – and offered to give them one to share, since they obviously were clueless to the burden they were placing on small businesses. Then they wouldn’t answer anymore of my questions. If it wasn’t our money they were wasting the imcompetency at so many levels would be funny.
