MOST STATES “JUST SAY NO” TO EXCHANGES

This week marked the deadline for states to inform the federal government as to their intentions regarding Obamacare’s costly and controversial state health care exchanges.

The good news?  Only seventeen states affirmatively moved to set up these government-run “marketplaces” – while twenty-six states explicitly rejected them.  A small group of states are setting up “hybrid” exchanges while two states – Florida and Utah – simply let the clock expire on the deadline without responding.  South Carolina long ago announced that it would not establish one of these exchanges – which are central components of U.S. President Barack Obama’s socialized medicine law.

(For a great map/ list of which states are in/ out on Obamacare exchanges, click on this page from our friends at NetRightDaily).

“State officials are very smart not to set up their own exchanges since any costs beyond what the Feds offer to help pay is on their taxpayers’ dimes,” writes Wesley Smith, Jr. of National Review Online.

That’s true.  Not only that, their refusal to establish these so-called “marketplaces” makes it extraordinarily difficult – if not impossible – for the federal government to meet its October 1, 2013 deadline to have exchanges up and running in all fifty states.

Michael Cannon of The Cato Institute – one of the nation’s foremost experts on the exchanges – says there is no way Obama’s Department of Health and Human Services will meet this deadline.

“HHS expected to be running zero exchanges,” Cannon told Investors’ Business Daily. “They have been throwing money at states to bribe them to start exchanges.  HHS maintains they’ll have these things up and running by October 2013.  I don’t know anyone who is confident about that and I’m ready to predict that they will not.”

Good …

The next fight?  Blocking the massive and costly Medicaid expansions associated with Obamacare.

Great news!

I mean here in SC we have those great “free enterprisers” at Blue Cross/Blue Shield to look out for us!

They have like what?

80% of the business here in SC

Lots of “competition”

You know Fits?

Come on give us some of that “free market ” stuff we all enjoy!

You know how there is really all this “competition” among health insurers, lower rates, all that STUFF

Thank God for Nikki Haley!

YIHEEEE!!!!

Sad to see the United States, SO divided. Anyone who needs medical care should be able to get it. There is a price for anything you purchase. When did this become the land of the entitled, instead of the home of the free/brave?

NOTHING in life is free!!!!! And now what people THINK is free is going to cost you plenty in taxes and freedom. IGNORANCE and what YOU THINK is ENTITLEMENT is taking away my freedom and OTHERS who believe in our right to choose. All who agree to this atrocity are setting up this country’s demise. Look at Canada, they are now letting newborns with a disability starve to death so as not to spend money. Reprehensible. That will happen here!! Have you read that if any hospital readmits a person in the hospital before thirty days will be fined? You ignorant people will be your own demise and many others. If you happen to reach the age of 55 or older you will not have the right to be treated again if you beat cancer once, because you are too old. Don’ t take my word for it…research it for yourself. Greed, ignorance and entitlements will be your downfall. All those who wanted this BUFFOON in office are going to get what’s coming to you when you or one of your family members will be the recipient of the government’s choice of death, because you are expendable and not worth the money to keep you or a loved one alive. A movie came out almost 40 years ago called “Solvent Green” with Charleton Jesting. If you haven’t seen it, I suggest you rent it. Even that movie does not touch the tip of the iceberg!! It is a prophetic movie. By the way, “ignorance” is not an insult, it’s the lack of knowledge of a subject(s). Educate yourself, before it’s too late.

My Dear Ms. Kahkola (if indeed that is your REAL name):

The movie you so INCORRECTLY refer to is “SOYLENT GREEN” (not “Solvent” Green starring Charlton HESTON (NOT Charlton “Jesting” – the one & same who played Moses and said: “From my cold dead hands” at a NRA convention.)

“Soylent Green” happens to be one of my favorite flicks and one of the phrases I post on this site from time to time is: “Remember: Tuesday is Soylent Green day” not to mention the one of the most famous lines in American film history which is: “Soylent Green is PEOPLE!!! (which I don’t quote)

For someone who claims to educate onesself your ignorance of the film you are so pittifully attempting to reference is appaling.

Insurance companies are doing a fucking good job right now deciding how much medical attention one gets and covertly deciding who gets to die and who gets to live.

“Soylent Green’ is about a dystopian society in 2020 suffering from the effects of GLOBAL WARMING and overpopulation (two subjects the ultra-right refuse to even acknowledge the possibility of occurring). The priviledged class(that being the type FITS sometimes espouses) have the only comforts we all enjoy today while everyone else lives in squalor and yes depend on the REGIONAL districts – not the FEDERAL government (states rights anyone???) for sustenence. Guess who runs the sustenence programs and provides the rations?? PRIVATE Corporations – THAT’S FUCKING WHO!!!!!

I won’t get into the rest of the movie because I too encourage FITS participants to watch it as well but for different reasons then you so ignorantly reccommend.

I think it’s hilarious that the very people who are so opposed to government “run” heatlh care are setting the stage for the very thing they dislike: universal government run healthcare exchanges. The states that have opted out won’t have any say in how it gets set up at all. Wait till folks in those states find out that what they will be able to get is far better than anything thier own state offers. All that is needed now is higher penalties on employers refusing to offer thier employees insurance, a public option and the ability to negotiate drug prices and we’ll get the rate of medical inflation down to reasonable levels. Before you know it, we’ll have a Canadian style system.

*I think it’s hilarious that the very people who are so opposed to government “run” heatlh care are setting the stage for the very thing they dislike: universal government run healthcare exchanges.*

Well, it kind of makes sense if you think it is going to be a failure(or just really bad).

The mandate for *univeral govt run healtcare exchanges* is already there. It is simply a matter of which entity is going to run it, state or Federal. Better to let those forcing it down everyone^s throat run what will most likely end up being a massive exercise in failure.(the Feds)

It is not like there is a *choice* in having it or not…our masters in DC have already made that decision.

Btw, I have very close relationships with a few Canadian citizens-all of which are not pleased with their healthcare….one is actually a veterinarian medical supply rep. and he actually had to hop up on one of his clients doggie MRIs to get a look at some knee issues he was having because he did not want to wait 6 months for the system to process him…

Canadian health care isnt universally loved by Canadian citizens and they do some medical tourism at times as a result.

Three yeara ago, Lindsey Graham wanted to scrap the Affordable Care Act and start over with a “blank sheet of paper”. We’re still waiting , GOPpers.
Also, any State can opt out of the ACA if they can present a plan that will be more cost effective than the Federal plan. I understand that Vermont has already developed, passed, and is now implementing a Single Payer system.
Republicans have become the Party of No Ideas. Like a gaggle of sidewalk superintendants, they can critique, but they can’f do.

When Medicaid/Medicare was introduced in the mid1960s approximately the same number of states initially signed up to participate in Medicaid. SC did sign on for about four years, in 1969/70. So not surprising to see states’ reluctance to sign on for “change.”

The last two hospitals in SC to fully participate in MEDICARE the health insurance program for the elderly were Roper Hospital in Charleston owned by the Medical Society of SC and SC Baptist Hospital in Columbia owned then by the SC Baptist Convention. They finally signed up in 1979/80. We are a state that does appreciate irony.

Free enterprise, or something else? I paid into this insurance company for years. Then I had a problem with just one eye. The problem was due to an error by a doctor or his staff. So my insurance company paid for the test and treatment but increased my premiums until they were very very high. Then they recruited a sales agent to come in with a new company with sensible premiums. Then just as the switch was taking place, the new company let us know they were excluding both my eyes. I am not sure what the solution is. However, the insurance companies are to blame for much of this. They are probably the reason Obama won the first time and the second time. They are a big part of the reason the Democrats got total control of the US House and Senate to pass the health care law. These companies should have just been replaced by a government program. We put a man on the moon, have the best military, a good interstate road system, etc. I know the government normally messes up stuff, but how can the government be any worse than the health care insurance companies I have dealt with?

RAS December 16, 2012 at 6:33 pm

Buddy, don’t confuse these cornballs. Government is the enemy.

For-profit insurance companies are friends. They always make decisions in the best interest of the insured. They never drop anyone no matter how long you have beeen paying premiums and they never increase their premiums after you have a claim. Never tell you which doctor you can or cannot go to. Never dictate to a doctor or a hospital what treatment is allowed.

These rubes are hellbent on working against their own self-interest. They have sipped the koolaid and they like it.

Those who commit mass murder are either dead or locked up. Whether or not they get executed or not is up to the states mainly. The United States federal government (in comparison to the separate states) applies the death penalty for certain crimes: treason, espionage, and federal murder.

So, would you please shut the fuck up and let people mourn this horrific crime without your right wing bullshit?

Honestly, I’m about 5 years from retiring and it’s up in the air if I will reside here after retiring

For clarification, in case there is any confusion, NOT running a State Based Exchange does not in any way mean that people in this state cannot and will not participate in Obamacare (ACA). Some of the above comments seem to suggest that we as a state opted out of Obamacare. All this means is that South Carolina declared that the citizens of the state will access health care offerings via a Federally Facilitated Exchange – which should, theoretically, provide even more options than a state based exchange.

This comment is not intended to be in favor of or against ACA – just trying to clarify SBE v. FFE.
