There have been no books banned in the United States. There have been many school systems/libraries that have determined a specific book was inappropriate for a specific audience and removed it from their shelves. If mom and dad want Junior or Sallie to read that book, they can order it from Amazon. A school system should never be in the position of advocating a specific lifestyle or political position.
A “banned book” is one that is not available by decree. A “banned book” is not available anywhere. According to Pen.Org – a supposed “champion [of] the freedom to write”, there were more than 10,000 instances of book banning in America last year. They go on to provide the list of most banned books – and the link to buy them on their online bookstore. One of the books on their “most banned” list is 13 reasons Why by Jay Asher. 13 Reasons tells the fictional story of an adolescent’s suicide.
The subject of the book is sexually abused (graphically described), uses drugs and alcohol and ultimately kills herself (after leaving behind a series of reasons why she is killing herself). It has since been turned into a Netflix series. According to the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, suicide among teenagers rose by 28.9 percent in the month after Netflix launched the show based on the book. The book has rightfully been challenged as appropriate for young people all over the English speaking world but guess what – for $7.57 you can get a copy from Amazon.
It ain’t been banned.

When the question is “is Clyburn lying or misinformed?”, it is usually safe to go with lying, especially if he is standing next to Newsome.

I’m gonna give Clyburn somewhat of a backhanded “pass” on this. Clyburn doesn’t have a clue whether what he read was true or not, and frankly doesn’t give two shits one way or another. He just reads whatever someone on his side hands to him. He has zero intellectual curiosity, independent thinking, or humility to ever apologize when found wrong. He just trucks arounds DC and his district concerning himself with the only thing he cares about: the acquisition and exercise of political power, and money. And to that task, he excels. There was a time decades ago where he was more motivated and conscientious, but like so many entrenched politicians, he abandoned those traits long ago. He’s just running the circuit, reading pre-drafted speeches that he never scrutinizes, and picking up checks for so doing. And he doesn’t give a shit if anything he reads is wrong, because he is for all practical purposes politically invincible in his highly gerrymandered district. In fact, one of his children is probably going to succeed him in office, and everyone in his district knows it.
