South Carolina Voter Registration Deadline Extended

Why, in a supposedly democratic society, would it require a court ruling to extend the registration period so citizens will be able to register to vote. This is after many have undergone multiple traumas from Hurricane Helene. Has the Republican Party not done enough already through other voter suppression attempts and shameless gerrymandering to thwart the democratic process?
