Former South Carolina senator and ex-Charleston County GOP chairman John Kuhn was arrested on Thursday morning after being involved in an alleged hit and run in the Holy City, according to jail records obtained by this media outlet.
News of Kuhn’s arrest was first reported by Ian Kayanja of WCIV TV 4 (ABC – Charleston, S.C.).
In the aftermath of the alleged hit-and-run, a Range Rover sport utility vehicle said to have driven by Kuhn appeared to run over a pedestrian who reportedly witnessed the collision.
“I saw you hit that car,” an unidentified black male yells at the driver of the Range Rover.
The black male is seen pushing against the hood of the Range Rover as he attempts to prevent it from leaving the scene of the reported collision. As the Range Rover moves forward into the intersection of Meeting and Columbus Streets in downtown Charleston, it accelerates quickly and appears to run over the black male – or at the very least knock him to the pavement.

According to jail records (.pdf), Kuhn was charged with hit-and-run resulting in property damage and “improper passing.” He was released less than four hours after being booked on a $10,232 personal recognizance bond – meaning Kuhn did not have to put up any money to post bond.
He is scheduled to appear in court on those charges on April 18, 2024.
Kuhn, 61, represented S.C. Senate District 43 (map) from 2001-2003. A decade later, he ran unsuccessfully for the Palmetto State’s first congressional district – receiving 6.5 percent of the vote in a 16-candidate field.
Kuhn was elected chairman of the Charleston GOP in April 2019, but resigned nine months later after a dispute with the party’s treasurer and first vice chairman.

No stranger to controversy, Kuhn has long drawn scrutiny for his uneven temperament – including multiple road rage incidents and a 2009 situation in Atlanta in which he was temporarily removed from a domestic flight for refusing to turn off a portable electronic device.

How is the guy he ran over? IMHO, his bond should have been much higher and cash, not PR. Scary guy.
Given the no money put up for bond the Honorable Bentley Douglas Price must be involved or he will be once this guy hires either McCoy, Short Stack, Paylor or one of his friends.
Nothing “alleged” here. Looks more like attempted murder. He pressed down on the accelerator and never looked back – that’s “grave indifference”. Damn lucky the guy wasn’t killed. Already this case smells like dung.

If i was driving down the street, minding my own business and said pedestrian had jumped in front of me attempting or appearing to attempt to stop me, I’d probably run him over too. However, if I had hit a car and he was yelling “I saw you…”, I’d probably pull over to avoid the hit and run charge. ‘Course drunks’ll do what drunks’ll do.
Sane people don’t jump in front of 6,000 pound automobiles, they write down the tag number and dial 911.
He wasn’t “minding his own business,” he was fleeing the scene of an accident, did you even read the article?? This should be attempted murder
So, I’m discussing “normal behavior” to point out that none of this is normal… I wouldn’t get run over by a drunk driving a 6,000 Range Rover just because the driver bumped into a parked car. I would however write down the license plate number and drop a dime, justice served and no hospital stay…
The sky briefly turned almost black in downtown Charleston from the number of Plaintiff’s lawyers literally dropping in from the sky on parachutes to vie for this, the easiest tort case in the world to prosecute. Albeit ill- advised, that dude was trying to do the right thing… the average juryman understands the basic sense of someone trying to stand up for what is just. That dude is going to get policy limits on every ounce of potentially responsive coverage that guy has, as well he should. He should also demand his own lawyer accept only a 25% fee for such a ridiculous easy and lucrative case.

From what I understand the gentleman that almost got ran over is autistic. “Drugged up” is an assumption. I did not see him administer a drug test before he careened off of the hood of his car.
The article refers to the pedestrian trying to stop Kahn as “black male” multiple times. The arrest record linked in the story lists “hit and run property damage (attended vehicle)” and “improper passing”. Looks like Kahn gets to run down the “black male” for free. WTF Charleston!
