Explosion At U.S.-Canadian Border Sparks Terror Attack Fears

While America’s southern border remains under siege due to an unprecedented influx of illegal aliens, narcotics and human trafficking victims – to say nothing of potential terrorists – an actual terrorist event was alleged to have unfolded Wednesday morning on the United States’ northern border.

Well, until the media outlet making those claims started walking them back …

Here is what we know: At approximately 11:15 a.m. EDT, a vehicle headed from New York to Canada at the Rainbow Bridge border crossing burst into flames after reportedly speeding through a checkpoint and striking a barricade.

Two people inside the vehicle were killed in the ensuing explosion. One border patrol agent was wounded, although the agent is expected to recover from their injuries.

The FBI announced it was investigating the event – which occurred at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility at Niagara Falls – along with state and local authorities.

“The FBI Buffalo Field Office is investigating a vehicle explosion at the Rainbow Bridge, a border crossing between the US and Canada in Niagara Falls,” a statement from the agency noted. “The FBI is coordinating with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners in this investigation. As this situation is very fluid, that’s all we can say at this time.”

Four border crossings in Western New York were shut down in the aftermath of the explosion.

According to Fox News’ sources, the vehicle contained “a lot of explosives.”

While speculation about a possible terror attack ran rampant on social media, Reuters reported at approximately 4:05 EST that the incident was “likely caused by a reckless driver.”

That report cited “early assessments” from “sources familiar with the matter.”

Meanwhile, Fox News quickly walked back its initial reporting … or at least indicated its sources were walking back their original assessments “as the fog clears on this.”

“Now we told you earlier that there was an explosion because there were explosives inside the car, and now authorities are apparently walking that back just a little bit saying it’s unclear if there were explosives or how many explosives,” host Trace Gallagher said.

“Clearly, this might not be a terror attack at all,” Gallagher added.

Spanning the Niagara River, the 1,450-foot Rainbow Bridge opened on November 1, 1941. It ferries pedestrians, bicyclists and non-commercial vehicles across the 202-foot Niagara River gorge. The bridge – and the border – were expected to be teeming with travelers on the day before Thanksgiving, which is the busiest travel day of the year in the United States.

While we await confirmation on what actually transpired at the Rainbow Bridge, what is not in dispute – at all – is the need to take drastic, immediate action to secure America’s borders, especially its southern border.
