South Carolina Senator Injured While Serving In Africa

South Carolina state senator Stephen Goldfinch was injured during a military deployment to Africa, a message from the president of his legislative chamber noted.

According to a letter from S.C. Senate president Thomas Alexander, Goldfinch was “injured in Africa” on Tuesday (August 1, 2023) and is “being transported to Germany for surgery.”

“His injuries are not life-threatening but will require some recovery,” Alexander wrote. “I’m delighted to report he is okay and in good spirits.”

No information was provided regarding the nature of Goldfinch’s injury, which was reportedly sustained outside of his “military duties.”

Goldfinch is a captain in the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade of the South Carolina National Guard. He was deployed on June 17, 2023 to Djibouti, a small nation of approximately 9,000 square miles (approximately the size of Vermont or New Hampshire) located on northeast African coast across the Gulf of Aden from Yemen.

Djibouti is bordered to the south by Somalia, site of the infamous Battle of Mogadishu in 1993. That battle killed eighteen American soldiers and wounded another 73 – and was the deadliest engagement involving American forces since the Vietnam War.

Goldfinch, 40 of Conway, S.C., missed several days of the 2023 legislative session as he trained for this mission – but was expected to return to the Palmetto State in time for the commencement of the 2024 legislative session next January in Columbia, S.C.
