Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating an incident involving convicted killer Greg Leon that took place on Friday afternoon at Kirkland Correctional Institution, a S.C. Department of Corrections (SCDC) intake center located just north of Columbia, S.C.

At least one local media outlet – The Lexington (S.C.) Ledgerreported on Facebook that Leon was “found deceased” inside the facility. This news outlet heard similar reports, but was unable to officially corroborate them – or corroborate similar reports suggesting Leon attempted to take his own life. Still other reports suggest Leon is on life support at a nearby hospital following a suicide attempt.

In fact, a source close to Leon’s family posted on social media that the Ledger report was “false” and that Leon was “on life support at Prisma,” a nearby hospital.

Again, none of these reports have been officially corroborated by SCDC or confirmed by any of Leon’s attorneys.

Meanwhile, an undated notification on VineLink – an inmate tracking system – listed Leon’s current status as “transferred” from SCDC to a “hospital/ medical treatment facility.”

Leon was convicted eight days ago of the 2016 murder of 28-year-old Arturo Bravo – the lover of his wife, Rachel Leon. He was sentenced by judge Walton J. McLeod IV to thirty-five years behind bars – with no chance of early release.

Greg Leon (SCDC)

Leon reported to Kirkland on July 7, 2023. At the time of the incident under investigation, he was in the process of being evaluated by corrections officials in anticipation of a permanent placement. That’s similar to the process we described back in March for convicted killer Alex Murdaugh, who spent a little over a month at Kirkland prior to being shipped to an undisclosed location within the SCDC system.

UPDATE | Leon deceased.

His sentence was excessive. He killed an illegal who did not belong here and who openly flaunted his manipulation of Mr Lein’s wife. It was a crime of passion at worst. Mr Leon built an impressive and successful restaurant empire. While he was wrong for bribing Jimmy Metts, he redeemed himself IMHO, by exposing and causing the de-throning of that longtime tyrant and crook.
