Officials in the town of Easley, South Carolina are reportedly conducting an investigation into an alleged racial slur used by their suspended police chief, Stan Whitten.

Meanwhile, Whitten is the subject of a related inquiry led by the office of Pickens County sheriff Rick Clark.

Details surrounding these investigations have yet to be shared with the public, however sources familiar with the situation have confirmed to this news outlet that Whitten was involved in a recent “incident” in which an alleged slur was said to have been captured on an officer’s body-worn camera.

City officials have said nothing about the incident other than it involves a “personal personnel problem,” according to Easley interim city administrator Tommy Holcombe. Whitten has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the inquiries.

According to our sources, Easley mayor Butch Womack requested a copy of the body-worn camera video containing the alleged racial slur as part of his city’s inquiry into the matter.

Upstate media outlets WYFF TV-4 (NBC – Greenville/ Spartanburg, S.C.) and WSPA TV-7 (CBS – Greenville/ Spartanburg, S.C.) are both reporting that the Easley inquiry is scheduled to conclude early next week.

Whitten has served as police chief of Easley since April 12, 2021. Prior to that, he was military police officer, U.S. Army investigator, Easley firefighter and Greenville County deputy.
