The former head of South Carolina’s prestigious Hammond School was arrested over the weekend in connection with a boating incident in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Christopher Brent Angel, 52, of Chattanooga, was charged by agents of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) with two counts of boating under the influence and one count of recklessly operating a watercraft. He was booked on those charges at the Hamilton County detention center on Friday June 9, 2023.
Details of what led to Angel’s arrest were not immediately available. This news outlet has reached out to officials in Tennessee for more information, and are in the process of preparing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests in the hopes of obtaining any releasable records.

Angel is president and head of school at the Baylor School in Chattanooga, a position he has held since July 1, 2021. Prior to that, he was Hammond’s headmaster from 2009-2021 and its upper school head from 2002-2009.
According to his online vitae, Angel is a graduate of the University of Georgia and has a masters degree in private school leadership from Columbia University in New York City. He graduated from the Baylor School in 1989.
As with anyone accused of committing any crime, Angel is considered innocent until proven guilty by our criminal justice system – or until such time as he may wish to enter some form of allocution in connection with a plea agreement with prosecutors related to any of the charges filed against him.

Horrible people get a school named after them and, no surprise, horrible people end up working at and running the place.

I’m sure there are both wonderful and horrible people at that school, just like any other.
