‘Week In Review’ From Moselle: Alex Murdaugh’s Double Homicide Trial Is Over

Justice and accountability in the ‘Murdaugh Murders’ crime and corruption saga have a long way to go, though …

The double homicide trial of convicted killer Alex Murdaugh is over … but the crime and corruption saga bearing his name goes on.

In the latest edition of our ‘Week In Review,’ research director Jenn Wood and I recap the dramatic conclusion of this six-week odyssey (including clips from the most decisive moments inside the Colleton County courthouse). We also discuss Murdaugh-related court cases yet to be argued, potential charges yet to be filed (state and federal) … and various avenues of research related to the case we plan on exploring.

Among those avenues? Drugs. Theft. And institutional (judicial) corruption.

Beyond the remaining charges against Murdaugh, his alleged drug dealer/ check casher Curtis “Eddie” Smith has an upcoming criminal trial – and there remain pending state charges against convicted fraudster Russell Laffitte (Murdaugh’s banker) and Beaufort, S.C. attorney Corey Fleming (one of Murdaugh’s closest friends).

Additionally, there is the high-profile wrongful death case filed in civil court by the family of Mallory Beach – whose tragic death in February 2019 began the unspooling of the Murdaugh’s legal dynasty.

Beach’s story is the focus of the recent Netflix documentary on the Murdaugh family.

Murdaugh – now officially known as S.C. Department of Corrections (SCDC) inmate number 00390394 (.pdf) – is also likely to face multiple additional indictments at the state and federal level.

Oh, and Murdaugh’s attorneys – led by Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin – have made it clear they intend to file an appeal in his double homicide case within ten days.

Bottom line? This story is far from over … and you can count on this news outlet to continue leading the coverage of it no matter where it takes us.

You guys have worked so hard and I appreciate the time and effort, and now I can’t wait to see the rest. Roots run deep, wide and sometimes straight up

Thankfully, it is over now. Can we let this go and move on to other things, or will the next month or six be endless re-hashes of all that has taken place?

Yes, like our love of the greatest Christian leader on Earth, Putin.

“and avenues of research related to this case we plan on exploring moving forward.”

Wee Willie will continue beating this dead horse with a dead horse ad nauseam.

Please stop fidgeting, Liz. It causes a lot of unnecessary static and makes you hard to understand. I had to strain to understand you during the remote broadcast you did outside the Murdaugh kennels. Otherwise….I love you and everything about FITSNEWS! I’m new here.
