Administrators at Chapin High School (CHS) in the northwest region of Columbia, South Carolina sent out an email earlier this week warning parents of an alleged threat issued by a student at the school.
The message – sent by principal Michael Ames – did not identify the name of the student or the nature of the threat. It noted that “any potential risk of danger” had been resolved and that “discipline was administered” to the student in accordance with the school’s code of conduct.

Sources say the same student issued another threat on Friday, causing the police to be dispatched to the school to address the situation. These sources report that the student is allegedly in isolation and is not a threat to other students at this time. One district source told me the “situation is an escalated rumor” and that “the girl only threatened to punch somebody. “
FITSNews has reached out to both CHS and the Chapin police department for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

A representative of school district five of Lexington and Richland counties sent the following statement, which was originally disseminated to parents, to FITSNews:
Dear Eagle Family,
I want to clarify the communication that was sent to the Chapin High School family yesterday in reference to a “threat.”
While it was reported yesterday that a threat had been made, I regret that I used the term “threat,” as it does not accurately describe the incident. The use of the term “threat” has unfortunately created the impression that the incident involved a weapon or gun, or danger to the safety of the students, staff or the school. This was not the case at any time.
With respect to the rumors that have arisen on social media about a threat at Chapin High School, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department issued the following statement:
We debunked what was initially investigated as a threat on social media. After our review, we determined there was no credible threat to the school or any individual on campus.
Again, I regret the confusion that has resulted from my communication.
I also want to remind everyone that School District Five has a responsibility to protect the rights of all students, to include any student who has been wrongfully accused.
The school’s administration remains available to assist students, staff and parents with any questions or concerns you may have.
