South Carolina Lawmakers Take Egyptian Junket

“Walk like an Egyptian …”

While hundreds of thousands of South Carolinians were working multiple jobs to make ends meet, multiple members of the Palmetto State’s ruling class decided it was a good time to take a cue from The Bangles and ‘Walk Like an Egyptian.’

Multiple state lawmakers posed for a picture this week in front of the great pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure on the Giza Plateau on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt.

The photo was posted on Monday afternoon to the Facebook page of state representative Rick Martin of Newberry, S.C. – one of the lawmakers who made the trip.

“I’d say our delegation represents South Carolina well,” Martin wrote.

No word yet on who is subsidizing the junket – or its ostensible purpose. We are in the process of gathering additional information about the trip – including its sponsor and a complete list of state lawmakers who accepted the invitation to participate in this junket.

Are trips like this inherently wrong? Assuming taxpayers aren’t picking up the tab, not necessarily, although we believe lawmakers who accept such invitations open themselves up to criticism – especially if they wind up doing the bidding of the special interests that subsidize these junkets.
