A notice posted in The (Charleston, S.C.) City Paper this week advised readers that “best-selling author” Pat Conroy would be hosting an “I Was Born in a Library” event in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina next week.
The event at the Wando Mount Pleasant library – scheduled for 6:00 p.m. EDT on the evening of Thursday, October 10 – is to feature Conroy leading “a discussion (of) his lifelong love of books and libraries, focusing on the roles of public libraries, school libraries, and Conroy’s own personal library.”

The only issue?
Pat Conroy is dead. And has been for more than three-and-a-half years.
The iconic twentieth century author – whose books include The Water Is Wide, The Great Santini, The Lords of Discipline, The Prince of Tides and My Losing Season – passed away on March 4, 2016 in Beaufort County, S.C. at the age of seventy following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
“So should I tell the Charleston City Paper that Pat probably isn’t going to be there or should I just let their error ride?” mused Jonathan Haupt, executive director of the Pat Conroy literary center in Beaufort, S.C.
Yeah … we cannot wait to see this correction.
