Officers of the Allen University police department are leading an investigation into a shooting that took place on the school’s campus Sunday evening, sources familiar with the situation tell this news outlet.

Details of the shooting are currently unavailable, but sources familiar with the situation tell us as many as two people may have been wounded in connection with the incident.

Allen is a private, historically black university of around 600 students located in downtown Columbia, South Carolina just north of the increasingly crime-ravaged Five Points shopping and entertainment district.

Founded in 1870 as the Payne Institute in Cokesbury, S.C. – a small hamlet in Greenwood County – the school moved to Columbia in 1880 and was renamed in honor of bishop Richard Allen, the founder of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church.

Officers with the City of Columbia, S.C. police department assisted campus police in responding to the shooting, however city police officials are referring all calls on the matter to the university police. We spoke briefly with campus police chief Kelvin C. Davis on Tuesday morning, but he referred our inquiries to the campus public information office.
