U.S. attorney Sherri Lydon is in line to fill one of two vacant federal judicial posts in South Carolina, a report from Avery Wilks and John Monk of The (Columbia, S.C.) State newspaper noted.
According to Wilks and Monk, eight sources confirmed to them that Lydon is the “expected nominee” for one of these coveted federal judgeships – which carries with it a lifetime appointment.
The highly sought-after positions are chosen by the president, although the U.S. senators for each state hold tremendous sway over the decision.
In other words, the choice will ultimately be made by U.S. president Donald Trump, but the recommendation to pick Lydon would likely wind up being the work of U.S. senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott.
A former criminal defense attorney, Lydon won the job of U.S. attorney last year after a bitter, months-long internal battle within the South Carolina Republican establishment.
She took office last May, and has been a force against public corruption and illicit narcotics rings in the intervening fourteen months. This news outlet has praised Lydon’s work on multiple occasions, although we have also pointed out how much more work she has remaining on her plate (through no fault of her own).

Given the positive, prodigious results she has been able to achieve in such a short period of time, we believe it would be profoundly disappointing to see Lydon leave her current post. On the other hand, though, we cannot think of anyone better suited to become the Palmetto State’s next U.S. district court judge.
In addition to reporting on Lydon’s status, Monk and Wilks also reported that two of her top deputies – 46-year-old Lance Crick and 41-year-old DeWayne Pearson – are among the top contenders to become the next U.S. attorney should she be confirmed as a federal judge.
No word yet on whether S.C. Department of Corrections (SCDC) director Bryan Stirling or S.C. House judiciary chairman Peter McCoy – who were both contenders for the post last year – might be in the mix this go-round.
