One day earlier, and this would have been perfect …
As it is … it’s still pretty funny.
This afternoon (Thursday, July 25, 2019) at around 1:00 p.m. EDT, one of our readers happened to be traveling on Highway 6 through Lexington County, South Carolina.
As they traveled, they came upon a mounted patrol trailer belonging to the Richland County, S.C. sheriff’s department.
Sticking its head (way) out of the trailer?
Not a police horse, but … a camel.

“Maybe there’s a perfectly good explanation why Richland (County) tax resources were being used to haul a damn camel across Lexington County,” our source mused. “If there is, I’d like to hear it!”
We would like to hear it, too …
According to an August 2018 article by reporter David Travis Bland of The (Columbia, S.C.) State newspaper, the camel in question is named Abraham – and is a “friend” of Clifford Fisher (head of the Richland County mounted unit) and Margaret Fisher, the elected coroner for Lexington County.
Abraham is 23 years old and addicted to Mountain Dew, according to Bland’s article.
Which is probably another story in and of itself …
Clifford Fisher owns the camel, which he told Bland he purchased years ago to “help tell the story about the birth of Christ.” Abraham is also used to promote charitable events – and as a campaign prop for his wife.
(Um … in-kind camel contribution, anyone?)
So … why is Fisher using a government-provided vehicle to haul Abraham around? Good question …
Perhaps an even better question: Does Richland County really need a mounted unit?
We will let our readers know if we get an answer to any of these queries …
UPDATE: Well, well … it turns out this was a much better story than we ever could have imagined.
