Even though his stock is slipping within the Democratic party, former U.S. vice president Joe Biden seems to think he is a lock to win the White House in 2020.
Not only that, he claims he is going to blaze his trail to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue by winning several southern states that haven’t backed a Democrat in decades.
The 76-year-old politician – who is struggling mightily since he formally entered the Democratic presidential primary earlier this spring – told a group in Washington, D.C. that he plans on beating U.S. president Donald Trump in numerous bright red states in the deep south next fall.
“I plan on campaigning in the south,” Biden said during a speech Monday at Trinity Washington University. “If I’m your nominee I’m winning Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, believe it or not, and I believe we can win Texas and Florida. Look at the polling there now … I have no intention of walking away.”
“Believe it or not,” huh? Yeah. We are going to go with “not.”
Trump won all of the southern states mentioned by Biden in 2016 … as well as several rust belt states that hadn’t voted Republican in decades.
[su_dominion_video_scb]The last Democrat to win the popular vote in South Carolina? Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter way back in 1976. Meanwhile the last Democrat to win in Georgia was Bill Clinton in 1992.
How does Biden intend to reverse Democrats’ deep south fortunes? By taking the fight to Trump …
“There are certain things where it just takes a brass knuckle fight,” Biden told his audience. “You have to go out and beat these folks if they don’t agree with you. That’s what presidents do.”
Hmmm …
We wonder … when he talks about beating those with whom he disagrees, is Biden referring to the rabidly liberal base that he and nearly two dozen other Democrats are courting? Or is he referring to the GOP base that is firmly behind Trump?
Because we don’t see him fitting in with either of those constituencies … nor do we see either of those constituencies turning out for his center-left presidential bid.
Bottom line? Biden is far too moderate for the lunatic fringe of the Democratic party, meaning that even if he wins his party’s nomination expect broad swaths of the far left flank to sit on their hands when the 2020 general election rolls around. Also, Biden is far too liberal to sway GOP voters who have rallied around Trump.
Neither of those realities strikes us as a recipe for carrying the deep south …
