Problems At SC Volvo Facility

More than 8,000 South Carolina-made vehicles subject to recall …

Chinese-owned Volvo is dealing with a recall of more than 8,000 vehicles manufactured at its government-subsidized manufacturing facility in Berkeley County, South Carolina.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), thousands of S60 sedans manufactured at the plant are at risk of “a sudden change in vehicle handling (that) can increase the risk of a crash.”

What happened?

“The rear suspension toe link flange lock nuts may not have been properly tightened, possibly resulting in a sudden change in vehicle handling,” the agency’s recall notice warned.

Affected vehicles were manufactured at Volvo’s Berkeley County facility beginning last September. The recall notice was issued on April 25, 2019. It is scheduled to take effect on June 21, 2019.

The remedy?

“Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear toe link flange bolts and lock nuts, replacing them if necessary, free of charge,” the recall notice advised.

Owners are encouraged to contact Volvo’s customer service line at 1-800-458-1552. They can also contact the NHTSA’s vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or visit www.safercar.gov.

Volvo announced its Berkeley County facility to great fanfare back in 2015, with South Carolina taxpayers turning over at least $120 million in start-up incentives to the company (including money for a massive corporate interchange on Interstate 26).

This news outlet opposed those handouts …

“We reject crony capitalist handouts on principle,” we wrote at the time. “They are patently unfair, and South Carolina’s escalating use of them to reward favored corporations at the expense of small businesses and taxpayers is killing our state’s consumer economy.”
