We knew municipal elections were happening at various times across the state of South Carolina this year, but we didn’t know some of these races were happening like … now.
Forest Acres, S.C. – one of the fastest-growing cities in the Midlands region of the Palmetto State – is actually holding its municipal elections next week. Incumbent mayor Frank Brunson is unopposed in his bid for a fifth term in office, while four candidates are seeking to fill two seats in a plurality election for city council.
Ginger Dukes and Curtis Rye are the two incumbents seeking reelection, while attorney Thomas Andrews and financial advisor John Barnes are the two candidates vying to replace them.
Dukes is seeking her fifth term, Rye is seeking his sixth.
Two local groups – the Forest Acres neighborhood association and the Forest Acres restaurant and merchants association – are co-hosting a forum this week for residents interested in meeting the candidates and learning more about the issues facing the city.
“Forest Acres is a city that has low taxes compared to its larger neighbor, Columbia,” one resident told us. “It is also attracting businesses and homeowners due to the high quality of life it offers. Like many urban cities, it is facing issues dealing with growth and development.”
[su_dominion_video_scb]This news outlet will have our eyes and ears at the forum, and would urge those interested in attending to do so. Also, there will be an opportunity for voters to directly question the candidates – which always gets interesting.
The forum is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 in the fellowship hall at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (3909 Forest Drive, Forest Acres, S.C.). Light refreshments will be served.

Sources tell us this municipal election will be a low turnout affair – and that any candidate who can rally 1,500 to 2,000 voters to the polls will likely prevail.
The nonpartisan election will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2019. Winners will be sworn in on July 1 for terms running through June 30, 2023.
