Agents of the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) have arrested a Clinton, S.C. man following a shootout at a Laurens County hospital early Thursday morning.
Kevin Boyce Patterson, 27, has been charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and pointing and presenting a firearm in connection with the shooting – which took place shortly before 2:00 a.m. EDT on April 11, 2019 at the Laurens County Memorial Hospital.
One officer was wounded during the incident – the sixteenth officer-involved shooting in South Carolina this year. Patterson was also wounded.
Thankfully, no other injuries were reported.
According to a probable cause affidavit accompanying the warrants for his arrest, Patterson dragged his father – Norman Patterson – at gunpoint through the hospital’s emergency room.
Upon being confronted by an officer of the Greenville Health Authority police department, the younger Patterson opened fire – wounding the officer. Patterson was then wounded himself when the officer returned fire.
SLED was called to the scene shortly before 2:15 a.m. EDT by deputies of the Laurens County, S.C. sheriff’s office.
As a matter of protocol, SLED investigates nearly all officer-involved shootings that take place in the Palmetto State. In this case, the agency initiated an investigation at the request of the Greenville Health Authority police department.
Charges against Kevin Patterson were based on video surveillance footage as well as statements from victims and witnesses. After being treated for his wound, Patterson was booked at the Laurens County detention center – where he is being held without bail. His case will be prosecuted by the office of S.C. eighth circuit solicitor David Stumbo.
As with anyone accused of committing any crime, Patterson is considered innocent until proven guilty by our criminal justice system – or until such a time as he may wish to enter a plea in connection with the charges against him.
