Death Reported At University of South Carolina Parking Garage

School calls incident “apparent death by suicide …”

A death has been reported to authorities at a parking garage on the campus of the University of South Carolina (USC), multiple law enforcement sources have confirmed to this news outlet.

According to an alert issued by the school at 3:25 p.m. EDT, the incident at the garage – located at 1300 Heyward Street – has been termed an “apparent death by suicide.”

Law enforcement sources have told us the victim is a white male, although no additional information regarding the incident was immediately available.

The incident at the garage – which is part of the school’s Dodie Anderson academic enrichment center – was first reported to the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) at around 2:15 p.m. EDT.

Shortly thereafter, school officials notified students of road closures in the immediate vicinity of the garage due to a “public safety incident.” Meanwhile, fans of USC’s softball team were advised shortly after 4:00 p.m. EDT that the garage would remain closed during a matchup against Ole Miss scheduled for that evening.

“Fans are encouraged to arrive early as parking will be limited around the area,” an advisory from the athletics department noted.

SLED will lead the inquiry into this incident per a 2007 law that requires the agency to investigate all fatalities “occurring on the property” of institutions of higher learning in the Palmetto State.  SLED is required by the same law (§ 59-154-10) to assist in investigating alleged sexual assaults that occur on South Carolina’s college campuses.
