California celebrity lawyer Michael Avenatti – who has gained national fame for representing adult entertainer Stormy Daniels in her various legal battles with U.S. president Donald Trump – has been arrested in connection with an alleged felony domestic violence incident.
According to the website TMZ, Avenatti “was arrested Wednesday after his estranged wife filed a felony (domestic violence) report.”
The incident is alleged to have occurred on Tuesday in the Century City area of Los Angeles. According to TMZ, Avenatti left his estranged wife’s face “swollen and bruised.”
The website claimed “the alleged incident occurred Tuesday, but there was a confrontation Wednesday” between Avenatti and his estranged wife, Lisa Storie. The erstwhile couple have been married since 2011 and are in the midst of a contested divorce.
“We’re told during Wednesday’s confrontation the woman ran out of the apartment building and was on the sidewalk on her cellphone with sunglasses covering her eyes, screaming on the phone, ‘I can’t believe you did this to me,'” TMZ reported.
[su_dominion_video_scb]It has been a bad month for Avenatti, who fancies himself as a potential Democratic presidential candidate.
His involvement in the failed attempt to scuttle the U.S. supreme court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh was pilloried by the right – and panned by the left.
“His involvement set us back, absolutely,” one Democratic aide told CNN.
Now Avenatti is facing potential criminal prosecution over allegedly false statements submitted to lawmakers about Kavanaugh.
Late last month, U.S. Senate judiciary committee chairman Chuck Grassley announced that he was referring Avenatti and the woman he represented in the Kavanaugh matter – Julie Swetnick – to the U.S. department of justice for criminal investigation related to potentially false claims made about the judge.
Kavanaugh said he “welcome the investigation.”
Obviously, any credible allegation of domestic violence would destroy Avenatti’s presidential candidacy before it even really gets underway.
The 47-year-old Sacramento native has crisscrossed the country over the last few months touting his presidential credentials. In fact, he was scheduled to appear at two events with Vermont Democrats this weekend – however those appearances have been cancelled in the aftermath of his arrest, according to the party officials.
