Donald Trump Puts Victorious House Democrats On Notice

“Two can play that game!”

If you thought Washington, D.C. was dysfunctional with Republicans controlling both chambers of congress and the White House … wait until you get a load of America’s return to divided government.

With Democrats seizing control of the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday night, U.S. president Donald Trump could find himself staring down a slew of investigations and possibly … impeachment hearings.

Looking to preempt possible Democratic moves against him, Trump firing off a warning tweet Wednesday to the soon-to-be majority party in the House.

“If the Democrats think they are going to waste taxpayer money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of classified information, and much else, at the Senate level,” Trump tweeted.  “Two can play that game!”

Never a dull moment, right?

Former House speaker Nancy Pelosi – who is likely to reclaim her former role in January – boasted that under her leadership Democrats would restore “the Constitution’s checks and balances to the Trump administration.”

“In sharp contrast to the GOP Congress, a Democratic Congress will be led with transparency and openness, so the public can see what’s happening and how it affects them,” she said on election night.  “We will have accountability.”

One particular item Pelosi has said she intends to obtain and release to the public?  Trump’s tax returns …

That may not be enough, though.  Democrats will be under intense pressure from their rabid base to impeach Trump – especially after exit polling across the nation showed overwhelming majorities of Democratic voters favor impeachment.

However liberal strategist David Brock cautioned against such a move, arguing the party should “focus on policy, not payback.”

Brock recalled how the GOP fell out of favor a quarter century ago in the aftermath of the “Republican Revolution” when it launched an all-out war against former president Bill Clinton.

“Shortly after taking control of the House …Republicans adopt a scorched-earth strategy of hounding Bill Clinton with empty Congressional investigations and scandal-mongering,” Brock wrote.

Will history repeat itself?

We shall see … but Trump’s tweet would certainly seem to indicate that he plans on adopting a doctrine of “mutually assured destruction” in the event House Democrats come at him next January.
