Letter: Poor Management “Rampant” At Continental’s SC Facility

Failed drug tests not the only problem facing Sumter tire maker …

Dear Editor,

Great piece on the staffing woes that continues to plague the Continental tire facility in Sumter, S.C.  Although you nailed it with the issue of potential employees failed drug analysis, there is another issue Continental doesn’t want to accept responsibility for.

As one of the first wave of employees at this facility, I witnessed first hand the managerial ineptitude that continues to be rampant to this day.  There was such a rush to receive production certification that thorough and sustainable training were both non-existent.

As it became more and more obvious that the ship was sinking, employees started looking for employment elsewhere.  Many of these employees even asked for their previous jobs back.  The issue even resonated to management and front-office personnel.  Actually the ONLY remaining original manager is the plant manager.

In summary, I did enjoy your article on the issue our state (and nation) is facing.  We need to do a much better job of preparing and training in all aspects of job retention.  Let us also not continue to shoot the low hanging fruit.  There are many other successful businesses in these very same areas that MANAGE to not use “weed” as an excuse.

Thanks for you time,

Eric Hairston
