The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) division is seeking more than eight-and-a-half years worth of voting records from the North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE) – along with additional data from nearly four dozen county election boards.
The records – which span a period of time from January 1, 2010 through August 30 of this year – were subpoenaed earlier this week by the U.S. attorney’s office for the eastern district of North Carolina.
Documents requested under the subpoena included voter registration applications, write-in absentee ballots, early-voting application forms, provisional voting forms, absentee ballot request forms, voter registration cancellation forms and documents related to the “admission or denial of non-citizen return forms,” according to reporter Brian Murphy of McClatchy.
More granular data was requested from county officials including poll books, voting records and copies of “executed official ballots.”
Reluctant election bureaucrats have until September 25 to appear in court with the requested documents.
“We are deeply concerned by the administrative drain on county boards of elections in order to comply with the extensive subpoenas immediately prior to a federal election, including the necessary reproduction of millions of documents (all ballots, etc.),” NCSBE general counsel Josh Lawson wrote in a meeting notice related to the request. “The subpoenas faxed to county boards are the most exhaustive on record. In our view, compliance with the subpoena as written will materially affect the ability of county administrators to perform time-critical tasks ahead of absentee voting and early voting.”
Liberals moved swiftly to decry the subpoena.
According to U.S. congressman David Price, ICE’s “massive request of North Carolina voter data seems clearly designed to disenfranchise and intimidate voters, and to disrupt the administration of an impending election with major state and national implications.”

This news outlet has consistently argued that efforts to enforce electoral integrity are necessary. Accordingly, we supported U.S. president Donald Trump’s formation of a commission to investigate voter fraud across the country. Trump’s Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity was tasked with collecting voter data and other information from the states in an effort to “fully analyze vulnerabilities and issues related to voter registration and voting.”
What’s wrong with that? Absolutely nothing …
Meanwhile, we have ripped the far left for “reflexively attacking any effort to safeguard the integrity of the ballot box as some sort of mass disenfranchisement scheme.”

Leaving your borders wide open and handing over power to anyone who wanders in is no way to run a country. It may be helpful in creating a “blue wave,” but it is no way to run a country.
