One of the most polarizing subjects we have ever covered is Bravo TV’s Southern Charm – a reality television show based in Charleston, South Carolina.
Fans of the program (and they are legion) literally cannot get enough of it … regularly flocking to our site to catch up on the latest on- and off-screen drama associated with its protagonists. And usually, the drama doesn’t disappoint.
Many of our regular readers, however, cannot stand Southern Charm (or our coverage of the show) … which they have made abundantly clear over the past five years since it premiered.
In the “not-so-charmed” camp? Stephen Colbert, host of CBS’ The Late Show. Colbert appeared on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live this week with Andy Cohen and revealed he is not a fan of the show – or its star, Thomas Ravenel
“You’re from Charleston,” Cohen said to Colbert. “Are you aware of the show that is taking over America?”
“I try very hard to not be aware of anything associated with Thomas Ravenel,” Colbert responded.
Ouch …
Cohen then proceeded to ask Colbert (with a straight face, no less) one of the funniest questions we have ever heard …
“What is the reputation of Thomas Ravenel in South Carolina?” he asked Colbert.
Ha!
“Just sterling,” Colbert responded – a wide sarcastic grin breaking across his face. “Absolutely sterling silver.”
Colbert went on to say he found Southern Charm “depressing” because the show – and its cast – reflect poorly on Charleston (which is accurate).

[/timed-content-server]“The entire thing was depressing to me because we don’t want this beautiful little town to be dissected as a, you know, just a … an abattoir of morals,” he said.
Abattoir? Impressive …
For those of you educated in a government-run school in the Palmetto State, here’s the definition. The word is a noun of French origin, taken from the word abattre – “to fell.”
We wonder if Ravenel – who speaks what Patricia Altschul has hilariously referred to as “Pepé Le Pew French” – knew of its etymology?
Basically, Colbert is saying Southern Charm is killing Charlestonian gentility … which again, it is.
Cohen continued to press Colbert to watch the program, calling it “the best.”
“I know people like it,” Colbert said. “I know people like it but I find the whole thing depressing.”
