A deputy with the Charleston County, South Carolina sheriff’s office discharged his weapon on Saturday morning during an incident with an armed suspect in Ladson, S.C. – a census-designated area of roughly 13,000 people situated on the border of Berkeley and Dorchester counties.
According to law enforcement sources, a yet-to-be-identified white male suspect was pulled over by a black male deputy at around 8:45 a.m. EDT. During the ensuing traffic stop, the suspect “presented a firearm” which resulted in “a confrontation in which the deputy fired his service weapon,” according to our sources.
The suspect was wounded during the incident but managed to flee the scene. He was captured shortly thereafter and is receiving medical treatment, although the extent of his injuries is unknown.
The deputy was not injured during the incident.
As a matter of protocol, Charleston deputies notified the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) – which investigates all officer-involved shootings in the Palmetto State (with the exception of those occuring in Richland County).
SLED will conduct an inquiry into the matter and present its findings to the solicitor with jurisdiction over the county, which in this case would be S.C. ninth circuit solicitor Scarlett Wilson.
