Obamacare was a lie. Unfortunately, so were all of those “Republican” promises to repeal it.
As a result socialized medicine – including government mandates to purchase health insurance – are alive and well, even in the most “Republican” state in America.
According to a new diktat issued by the increasingly left-leaning University of South Carolina, all “undergraduate students taking six or more credit hours, graduate students taking six or more hours, graduate assistants and international students must have health insurance” when they arrive on campus this fall.
Wait … what?
This school is implementing an individual mandate for health insurance? That’s right …
Something’s gotta fund all that “snowflake therapy,” right?
“Research shows students who are uninsured and become seriously ill or injured have a much harder time completing their academic careers,” the school said in a statement. “Every student’s health and wellness are critical components to academic success. Students with insurance stay healthier by using recommended preventive care services that help avoid health issues and often detect medical issues that need attention. The primary purpose of student health insurance is to keep students healthy and in school so they can graduate and realize their life and career goals.”
Really?
Because it sounds to us like the “primary purpose” of this mandate is to ring the cash register …
In fact, students who fail to purchase coverage from the university-sponsored student health insurance plan are required to “provide documentation of comparable insurance coverage and submit an online waiver.”
Unreal …

[/timed-content-server]This news site has repeatedly railed against government-compelled participation in a private marketplace. In fact, one of the few good things about the “Republican” tax plan signed into law December was its repeal of Obamacare’s hated individual mandate.
Clearly liberal higher education institutions – which are already relying on government guarantees to prop up their out-of-control tuition costs – are stepping into the void created by the new tax law and imposing their own mandates.
The result? Already exorbitant tuition costs are about to get even higher …
As we have consistently stated, higher education isn’t – or at least shouldn’t be – something taxpayers are forced to subsidize.
“It is simply not a core function of government – whether via direct appropriations to institutions or taxpayer-guaranteed student loans,” we wrote in a post earlier this year.
In fact, the federally guaranteed student loans propping up these liberal institutions have become an existential threat to our economy …
If we’ve said it once we’ve said it a million times: It is past time America’s colleges and universities were set free to pursue their destinies in the private sector.
Let them impose their mandates there …
