South Carolina state senator Tom Davis – one of the few fiscally conservative state lawmakers in the S.C. General Assembly – praised 2018 gubernatorial candidate John Warren for his performance during a “Republican” debate earlier this week.
Davis flirted with a 2018 gubernatorial bid of his own last fall, but ultimately decided to stay in the South Carolina Senate – where he has battled for years on behalf of taxpayers.
He has not endorsed a candidate in the increasingly contentious race, but he had kind words for Warren following Tuesday’s debate.
“I’m impressed with South Carolina GOP gubernatorial candidate John Warren’s views on offshore-drilling (against) and medical cannabis (for), especially since he hails from the Upstate where, according to conventional wisdom, politically influential and socially conservative voters skew the other way on these two issues,” Davis wrote on his Facebook page this week.
“Gutsy,” Davis added.
Warren welcomed Davis’ comments.
“Tom Davis has been a champion for liberty in the state senate and I look forward to working with him as governor,” Warren told us. “I appreciate his kind words about my campaign.”
Obviously this news site disagrees with Warren and Davis on the offshore drilling issue. We support drilling (and with good reason). However, we have long praised Davis for his advocacy on the issue of decriminalizing medical marijuana – an issue we have often referred to as a “moral imperative.”

The Lowcountry lawmaker didn’t say, but sources familiar with his deliberations say he is likely to refrain from giving an endorsement in deference to his longtime colleague in the S.C. Senate, Kevin Bryant.
Bryant, the current lieutenant governor of South Carolina, is currently polling in fourth place in the GOP gubernatorial race – behind incumbent governor Henry McMaster, Warren and Lowcountry labor attorney Catherine Templeton.
Voters head to the polls on Tuesday for the first round of voting. If no candidate eclipses the fifty percent threshold in this race (as none are expected to do), the race heads to a runoff on June 26 between the two top vote-getters.
