The South Carolina toddler who was the subject of an AMBER Alert on Tuesday has been found … and the news is not good.

According to local law enforcement sources, eleven-month-old Harlee Lane Lewis was found dead near the same Loris, S.C. residence from which she was reportedly abducted just hours earlier.  Chesterfield County sheriff’s deputies are leading the investigation into her death, but sheriff Jay Brooks told reporters on Tuesday afternoon that “no kidnapping” took place.

Nineteen-year-old Breanna Lewis – Harlee’s mother – was taken into custody in connection with her little girl’s death.

Just moments before Lewis’ body was discovered by Chesterfield County, S.C. deputies, the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) issued the AMBER Alert for a white male suspect who was allegedly connected to her disappearance.  That alert was officially canceled just before 5:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday in light of the tragic discovery.

According to the alert – which was based on information provided to authorities by Lewis’ mother – the suspect allegedly abducted the girl at around 1:20 p.m. EDT and fled the scene in a tan or gold sport utility vehicle.

Police believed this SUV was transporting Lewis to North Carolina – that is, until they found her lifeless body inside a diaper box in a field about 1,000 yards from the mobile home where her mother was residing.

SLED has dispatched crime scene and child fatality agents to the scene to assist local law enforcement in its investigation.
