The top challenger to incumbent “Republican” governor Henry McMaster of South Carolina is preparing to announce her running mate.
Catherine Templeton – a Lowcountry labor attorney and two-time cabinet appointee of former governor Nikki Haley – will reportedly advise members of the media today about a press event scheduled for Tuesday.
That event will reportedly serve as the backdrop for Templeton’s “lite gov” announcement.
So … who is she choosing as her No. 2?
Good question …
Templeton’s team is holding this selection tightly to its vest. In fact, multiple campaign staffers parroted the same line back to us when we inquired about the looming announcement late last week.
“We’ll make sure you know when we have something on lieutenant governor,” they told us.
M-hmmm.
McMaster has already chosen his running mate – Upstate businesswoman Pamela Evette (or to be more precise, he reportedly allowed former SCGOP chairwoman Karen Floyd make the selection for him).
Of course like everything the McMaster campaign has touched during the current election cycle, the selection of Evette – made back in November – hasn’t had the desired effect. In fact many of McMaster’s own donors hated the choice.
It certainly hasn’t helped McMaster in the polls … as the one-time lock for the GOP nomination now finds himself in a pitched battle with Templeton, Upstate businessman John Warren and lieutenant governor Kevin Bryant.
All three Democratic gubernatorial candidates have made their picks … some choosing better than others.
