Upstate South Carolina businessman John Warren has launched a new television/ radio ad combo in his bid to become the “Republican” nominee for governor of the Palmetto State in 2018.
Warren’s new 30-second television spot, entitled “Headlines,” deplores the sad state of affairs in Columbia, S.C. – identifying gang violence, shoddy roads and a botched, multi-billion dollar nuclear reactor (a.k.a. #NukeGate) as being among the state’s unacceptable outcomes.
“In the Marines we saved lives and protected Americans, but politicians – they can’t even solve basic problems,” Warren says in the ad. “We need conservative solutions like checking gang members’ immigration status, stopping no bid contracts for Columbia insiders and accountability budgeting for every governmental agency.”

In his 60-second radio advertisement, Warren’s voice is heard over the din of honking horns on a crowded freeway.
“Are you stuck in traffic right now?” he asks. “Even after raising our gas taxes, state government hasn’t fixed our crumbling roads and bridges.”
That’s true … just as we predicted it would be.
Next – in one of the niftiest lines we’ve heard yet during this campaign – the Marine goes on to say “the roads in South Carolina remind me of the roads I saw in Ramadi, Iraq.”
Well-played, sir … well-played.
In fact we’re curious why that line wasn’t included in Warren’s television spot …

“State government shouldn’t make you late for work or dinner with your family,” Warren said in a statement rolling out his ad combo. “As governor, I’ll stop the corrupt political insiders who misspend our money. I’ll eliminate the Department of Transportation bureaucracy to fix our roads and bridges quickly, and I’ll take power away from the politicians who raised our gas taxes but have nothing to show for it.”
Warren – who has pledged to invest $2.5 million of his own money into the governor’s race – is looking to break through what has been a two-candidate battle for the GOP nomination between incumbent “Republican” Henry McMaster and Lowcountry labor attorney Catherine Templeton.
That battle has ramped up on the airwaves over the last few weeks, with Templeton scoring some big wins in the air war.
Depending on which campaign you believe, polling shows McMaster anywhere between 40-46 percent, Templeton anywhere between 20-25 percent and Warren in third between 13-17 percent.
Of course the situation is extremely fluid …
GOP voters head to the polls for the first time on June 12 – less than four weeks away. In the event no candidate receives a majority of votes on the first ballot, a runoff election between the top two vote getters would commence two weeks thereafter – on June 26.
