Agents of the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) are investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place in Orangeburg, S.C. on Thursday morning.
This is the sixteenth officer-involved shooting in the Palmetto State this year (South Carolina set a new record with 49 officer involved shootings in 2017).
According to law enforcement sources, U.S. Marshals were attempting to serve an arrest warrant against 17-year-old Najquan Hampton at an address on Jamison Avenue in downtown Orangeburg (near South Carolina State University). Shots were fired at them during the attempted service by another man, Darian James.
No law enforcement officers were wounded during the exchange.

Hampton was eventually taken into custody, but James remains at large.
The shooting forced officials with Orangeburg County school district five to re-route students who were headed to Robert Howard Middle School – which was located blocks away from the incident. Those students were sent instead to Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School.
