Uber-liberal national Democratic leader Jim Clyburn says his party must retake the U.S. Congress in 2018 … or else.
“If we’re still in the minority (after the November elections), all of us have got to go,” Clyburn told Politico.
Democrats lost the U.S. House in 2010, the U.S. Senate in 2014 and the White House in 2016 … not that it’s mattered. In case you haven’t been paying attention, they’re still governing.
This year, party leaders are confident a blue wave is building … one that will enable them to become a literal majority once again (as opposed to a functional one). According to Clyburn, if that doesn’t happen then the party’s leaders need to step down.
If Democrats fail to retake the U.S. House, Clyburn says the party must undertake a “real assessment” of its future. As if this point wasn’t sufficiently driven home, the 77-year-old lawmaker appeared onstage last week at his annual fish fry event in Columbia, S.C. with U.S. congressman Tim Ryan of Ohio – who ran unsuccessfully against minority leader Nancy Pelosi in 2016.

Fifty-nine seats in the U.S. House are open in 2018. Of those 39 are held by “Republicans” and twenty are held by Democrats. To win a majority in the House, Democrats must pick up 23 seats – and hold all of the seats they currently occupy.
Meanwhile in the U.S. Senate, “Republicans” occupy just nine of the 35 seats up for grabs in 2018 – meaning the party could conceivably expand on its “majority” despite the looming blue wave.
Of course with liberal GOP leaders like Lindsey Graham and John McCain calling the shots in the upper chamber, we would ask once again … what’s the point?
As we’ve noted repeatedly, “Republican” control of Washington, D.C. has meant absolutely nothing over the last quarter century. The GOP betrayed the “Republican Revolution” of 1994, and dropped the ball again in 2002 and 2016 when given control of both congress and the White House.
