South Carolina Democrats are so desperate to recruit candidates to run for office they’ve launched a robocall campaign hoping to convince them to take the plunge.
A new recorded phone message from S.C. Democratic Party (SCDP) chairman Trav Robertson accuses “Republicans” in the Palmetto State of “bankrupting our hospitals” and blocking “education funding for our kids.”
Really? Clearly he hasn’t checked the math on education funding lately …
Anyway … these are among the reasons Robertson says would-be candidates should sign up to seek elected office.
“You’ll be voting for a new representative in November and we want to see your name on the ballot,” Robertson says in the message, urging listeners to contact the SCDP and tell them they are “ready to run.”
Here’s a partial recording of the message obtained by this news site …

“We’ll make sure you’ll be able to take the first steps toward changing our state,” Robertson stated, although the message doesn’t discuss what sort of specific aid the party might provide.
Democrats are the perpetual minority party in the Palmetto State. They control zero statewide offices, zero U.S. Senate seats, just one of seven U.S. congressional seats (the heavily gerrymandered sixth district) and are the decided minority in both chambers of the state legislature.
Having said that, Democrats wield disproportionate power at the state level given the fiscally liberal bent of most GOP lawmakers – often helping to comprise a governing majority that knows no party affiliation.

Nonetheless, our network of GOP sources didn’t miss the opportunity to needle Robertson and his perpetual minority party.
“The fact that the SCDP is having to use robocalls for candidate recruitment goes to show how disorganized their party is and the complete lack of interest people have in their party,” one GOP operative told us. “They couldn’t find their butt with both hands so they are reduced to doing robocalls to find candidates. Bless their heart.”
