We haven’t been following the special election for South Carolina House District 69 all that closely because the race is something of an anomaly.

The “Republican” primary election for this seat – which was vacated two months ago thanks to the resignation of disgraced ex-lawmaker Rick Quinn – is scheduled for February 27, with a runoff slated for March 13 (if necessary).  With no Democrats in the field, that means the special election will be settled on the GOP side of the ledger.

Of course just three days after the runoff, filing opens for the regular primary election for this seat – a contest that will be held on June 12.

In other words, the winner of this special election will immediately have to defend “their” seat in a regular election – which we believe will be the race to watch.

Nearly a dozen candidates expressed interest in the special election for this seat but only five of them wound up filing.

They are: Attorney (and former S.C. State House staffer) Joel Deason, local school board member Anne Marie Eckstorm Green, hairdresser Alan Ray, attorney Michael Weaver and local businessman Chris Wooten.

According to our sources, Wooten is the frontrunner in the GOP special election primary – with the rest of the field vying for a shot against him in the runoff.

The five candidates gathered at a public forum earlier this week, with public corruption and school violence topping the list of topics.

Wooten surprised the other candidates at the event by leaving the stage and delivering his opening statement while walking amongst the sparse crowd that attended the forum at River Bluff High School.

“First and foremost we need to restore Christian values to the State House,” Wooten said.

Actually, first and foremost we need to restore freedom and free markets to the State House …
