A statewide search is underway in South Carolina as authorities seek to locate a missing four-year-old Lowcountry girl.

Heidi Renae Todd of Johns Island, S.C. disappeared from her family’s home sometime Tuesday after her mother was “brutally beaten” by an as-yet-unidentified assailant.

The suspect in the alleged home invasion is described as a skinny, hispanic male in his mid-to-late-twenties with short hair who was dressed in all grey.  According to Todd’s mother, who is currently in fair condition at a local hospital, the intruder gained “unwanted” access to her home at 2985 Sweetleaf Lane on Tuesday afternoon.

Todd was reportedly wearing pink pants and a blue t-shirt at the time she went missing.

“There are many things that we do not know,” Charleston mayor John Tecklenburg told reporters on Wednesday afternoon. “But there’s one thing that we know … that Heidi Todd is missing. … Help us find her.”

Two other children were in the home at the time of the alleged incident but both are accounted for and unharmed, authorities say.

Todd’s father is a member of the U.S. Coast Guard who was participating in a training mission out-of-state at the time of the incident.  He has since been reunited with Todd’s mother at the hospital.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has offered a $10,000 reward for information that helps its agents locate the girl.  Additionally, local law enforcement agencies have set up a tip line in the hopes of gathering additional information regarding her disappearance.

Meanwhile the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has issued a statewide “be on the lookout” (BOLO) bulletin and provided a helicopter and other resources to assist those leading the search.
