Agents of the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) arrested a Lowcountry man this week after he allegedly tried to claim winnings from the S.C. Education Lottery using stolen tickets.

Kinyard Maurice Sheppard, 27, of North Charleston has been charged with five counts of “falsely making, altering, forging, uttering, passing or counterfeiting of a lottery ticket.”

The charges are felonies and each individual count could land Sheppard in jail for five years and deprive him of $50,000.  That’s a possible total of 25 years in jail and $250,000 in fines.

According to an affidavit filed with the warrants for Sheppard’s arrest, on January 11 of this year he attempt to pass off a total of seventeen different stolen scratch-off lottery tickets at five different convenience stores in the North Charleston area.

SLED investigated the case at the request of the S.C. Education Lottery Commission.  Sheppard was booked on the charges at the sheriff Al Cannon detention center in Charleston County.  His case will be handled by the office of S.C. ninth circuit solicitor Scarlett Wilson.

Like anyone accused of committing any crime, Sheppard is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty by a jury of his peers (or until he makes a public pleading in connection with the case).
