Supporters of medical marijuana have some good news to tout as they continue to push for its decriminalization in the state of South Carolina.
According to a December 2017 survey conducted by Washington, D.C.-based Mason-Dixon Polling and Strategy, registered voters in the Palmetto support the right of doctors to prescribe medical marijuana to patients by a two-to-one margin.
Asked specifically whether they would support “a bill authorizing South Carolina doctors to prescribe the use of medical marijuana for specific medical conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorders,” a whopping 61 percent of respondents answered in the affirmative.
Only 31 percent said they would oppose such a bill, while eight percent of those sampled said they were “undecided.”
Support for the measure cut across geographic, gender, age, racial and partisan lines.

We spoke at length this week with former U.S. attorney Bill Nettles, head of the pro-cannabis organization which commissioned the poll. We also spoke with several law enforcement sources who have opposed decriminalization in the past.
Stay tuned for a follow-up piece incorporating those perspectives …
As for this news site, we have consistently argued in favor of decriminalizing marijuana and other drugs – for both medical and recreational purposes. Naturally we are pleased to see such strong support for the decriminalization of medical cannabis – and we hope state lawmakers will heed the results of this survey.
Having said that, we look forward to sharing perspectives from both sides of the debate … and letting those with passionate views on the matter weigh in whether we agree with them or not.
